Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 (2024)

Determined to leave the past behind, Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Owl and Tigger muster the resolve to fight in the town of Ashdown leaving death and destruction in their wake.

Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey has made a mark in the previous year being considered one of the worst horror films. This was my most dissatisfying film viewing and was also very passionless. The film had no horror and no fun at all; it was quite a boring affair. So, when a sequel was announced, such slanders were working in my head, and so they did when they announced the Poohniverse. But I am here to tell you that it looks like the filmmakers were smart this time and know how their movies are supposed to be made entertaining.

Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey 2 continues Christopher Robin’s story a year later after the proceeding events of the original film. He is now played by Scott Chambers. The only thing that I can remember from this universe is The imaged film (this I reviewed HERE) was a “movie” in this world. It clarifies the alien monstrosity redesigns and also the lead’s replacement. It is honestly a good time to reset the whole series. If they are going to turn this into a full universe, then the last movie did not do a great job of setting up the geography. This one, however, does better in creating an actual town close to the 100 Acre Wood. It is not just an abstract wooded place. This makes the film more amenable to the slasher aspects.

Most of the film depicts the massacre of the residents of Ashdown at the hands of Pooh and the gang. And good grief, what a lot of corpses there is. I believe I lost track at around the count of 40, but it would not be surprising to me at all if it actually went over 50. What is even more shocking is that these are not just quick covered quick cuts of stabbings and other bloody violence. At least five heads had the decency to be chopped off and all were different in their own way. Its not exactly the level of Terrifier but it’s pretty evident that is the centre focus. Since there is hardly any character whom the audience is made to sympathise with, the deaths feel almost indifferent. So expect a lot of “Yay Go. Get ’em” in your theater the moment someone is about to die.

The designs in the previous film were rather bland, so it was a pleasant surprise to see an improvement. Piglet, particularly, looked awful in a Halloween store costume. And no, I will not assert that these beings do not resemble men in costume, but that is part of the appeal. Owl in particular is quite amusing in fact, he looks quite dumb when he flies around. Even so, there were occasions when it was somewhat difficult to tell the outlines of Tigger and Pooh apart. It seems to me that their faces were simply too alike. One other aspect they constantly worked on in the film was also the animaton which was character packed so to say. I appreciated the blue shade, and they certainly spent a little more of the animation budget on good animation.

Even the technical aspects of the picture appear to be noticeably elevated. Since there are so many eyes that are usually on these Public Domain Horror films, it’s refreshing to at least finally see the production value raised to some professional level. This is presumably a creative challenge and I don’t understand why some people call it a “day at the office”. Fortunately, there appears to be some enthusiasm for making the film in the first place. I am not really sure what the difference was between the first film and this sequel, but I am glad that they didn’t take the ostrich approach and make the same picture again.

I must say that I was pleasantly delighted with the end product of Blood and Honey 2. My expectations were at best low and I may have even been taken by surprise by how bold it managed to be. The kills are grueling and almost incessant. Whenever the narrative seems to be bogged down by too much about the backstory they always go to another more interesting kill sequence. From the film’s opening which played before the screening, we learned that Scott Chambers and Rhys Frake-Waterfield are filmmakers who have some exciting projects in the pipeline. And frankly, perhaps after a while they’ve realized, and fixed their mistakes, that this is exactly how these Public Domain Horror Films is supposed to be. And that is a simple story that has tons of gory violence that all ends in an awesome fight. Provided they do not deviate from the formula too much, it will definitely be an interesting universe to follow.
