Dear readers, today I come with a very special message, for I was lucky to preview the much awaiting film The Hopeful before its theatrical release, and now I want to invite you to enjoy it as well. Based in 19th century New England, this moving picture embodies the story of a community built on a promise and nourished by hope during the waiting period for the return of Christ.
Synopsis The Hopeful is centered around the incredible life of William Miller, whose prophetic delay caused many lives to change in the mid-1800s. Surviving the War of 1812, Miller has lost his direction until one day he discovers an extraordinary prophecy the world will end. His apocalyptic prophecy began a movement and drew many people’s attention and devotion but neglected many others, leaving them disappointed when that date came and passed to a whimper. However, out of this disappointment was born a new idea of faith and a new way of worship, which made way for the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
My Reflections: For a Christian such as me, who now places all her hope in the return of Christ, I found The Hopeful to be inspiring as well as challenging. The film adequately reproduces the excitement and zeal which were common features of the 1844 movement and is relevant to the present that of patiently waiting for the return of Jesus, which is the hope that the faithful have always had throughout the ages.
Yet the characters in this story are given real life. William Miller, in this role a once modest farmer who became an unwilling preacher, captures the highs and lows of an individual trying to pursue the very message he leads. With him is Ellen Harmon, a character who quite passionately interprets the message about God’s calling and the significance of visions. These characters and those such as James White are witnesses of the struggle and power of faith amidst struggles.
One of the aspects that I believe enhances the narrative is the Wars of 1812 context of the film, as it shows how from the ruins and uncertainty, hope and community can rise again. I do not share the same beliefs as the Seventh Day Adventist Church, however, I found their determination to pursue the truth and their desire for a closer walk with God very inspirational.
Why You Should See It The Hopeful is more than a film, it is about self-examination and remembering what it means to be patiently awaiting for Jesus. The possibility to put forward change or transformation in oneself or communities as he or she remains hopeful for the better is something that is beautifully depicted in this movie. Families that love the entertaining side of movies and those that are aligned with Christian values will enjoy watching this film as it provides encouragement and inspires conversation about faith, exploring communities, and the role of God.
