The Instigators

In “The Instigators” the funniest detail might be the quip about the public school system taught in Quincy, Massachusetts, a suburb in the Boston metropolitan area that most people mispronounce. This is probably an in-joke, just as the subsequent loving shots at other areas of Greater Boston, their slang, and bent politicians are. This is something of a caper, but this is first and foremost a killing-in-Boston picture filled with Boston boys, Boston accents, (South) Boston locations, and Boston humor. For crying out loud, The Instigators can be described as Boston The Experience. Huh, surprise it is Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production and there is Casey Affleck in the movie he co-wrote with the Damon.

Doug Liman, director of “The Instigators” hails from New York City. However, in 2002 they found common ground in collaboration in the movie “The Bourn Identity.” Now many years later, they return to work in a film studded with stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Alongside Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Alfred Molina, Ving Rhames, Paul Walter Hauser, Toby Jones, Ron Perlman, and even rapper Jack Harlow in his second feature role.

Fast forward to the year 2024, and all those stars are only enough to earn a limited one-week release in theatres before heading to streaming services. Given a few weeks in theaters to pick up steam, I do see it being quite successful since it is a rather relaxed movie; it’s not complicated or anything. Perhaps, the cult of the ’ Ocean’ movie was notable when creating “The Instigators” script because the movie’s main characters are also robbers gathered around a rage-filled character, prominent in appearing in crime ensembles, which establishes the impression that this particular heist would be their last: Mr. Besegai (Stuhlbarg)! Who could have imagined? Perhaps the standing mayor (Perlman, quite frankly, is a perfect match) is corrupt, making it almost certain that he will be re-elected and the bribes used during the victory party.

Some of the group, like Rory (Damon), have bills to pay, and he is late on child support. He is anxious, and his therapist, Chau, is also anxious about him. Others, like Cobby (Casey Affleck) and Scalvo (Harlow), are his mates who do such things. However, Mr. Besegai is not Mr. Ocean, rather, he has none of that airy luck. Everything from the very beginning is flawed and Cobby and Rory end up experiencing this one too many amusing misunderstandings.

Despite the fact that there are many possibilities for a successful conclusion to this story, “The Instigators” has various unwieldy bumps. On one side, its protagonists are eccentric braggarts with remarkable hysterics, “insult humor” that comes so fast you cannot quite get it all. MacLean, in an interview in 2019, said that Boston honor was “jaw-droppingly cynical” with an appreciation of the “absurd” that characterizes the film. Chau is a refreshing relief from all the morons and cocky people and the film picks up when she, Damon, and Affleck form a three-hander.

But that rhythm lands a little too late, and until then, it’s a bit tough to follow the plot. It has this zig and zag in a nice way, but certain things shown in flashbacks, the ghosts in Ms. Day’s character, get lost in the rush of events that follow. The intent of this picture is obvious it aims to turn the script of ‘Ocean’s 11’ on its head. But the whole purpose of subverting is to cut across, like how Walk Hard The Dewey Cox story mocked the guitarist biopic or every film by Robert Altman cuts across the genre it is surrounded by. Once you view a subversive plot pattern throughout a film, the rest of that genre’s material can become rather tedious.

‘The Instigators’ poses no problem to the slick, able-heist genre, maybe because its dream is clear from the very onset. This film would rather wallow in the love of its city of strange, beautiful, tough people. Boston could frighten filmmakers the most obsessively because it may be the least standard American city, smaller, more similar than LA or even New York, even as it lets in more variety. And while the residents of Boston and its suburbs have a vast number of micro-accents, even a foreigner would have no problem identifying the area.

But it is likely that unique sense of humor, its teasing joie de vivre, that makes Boston work so well onscreen. And alright, I enjoy listening to men who resemble and sound like my uncles. Finally, If the narrative of “The Instigators” somewhat stalls, its characters provide it with the ambiance of a hangout film interspersed with a few gun fights, car chases, and strategically placed explosions. And that at least, is wicked nice.
