Fans of action films dont ask for much aslong as the film is engaging or entertaining, and they have their own set of followers. Jai’s recent film effort is ‘Yenni Thuniga’ and it is yet to be known if it will be beneficial for the target audience.Jai tries to portray these themes in the masala film ‘Yenni Thuniga.’ There is no deep emotional conflict in why the protagonist seeks revenge. Most action and superhero films of late have been focusing on explosions instead of powerful storytelling. Like Hollywood does with Fast and the Furious, the Indian approach certainly makes sure there is plenty for fans to aesthetically enjoy.
One of the disguised robbers invades a jewel shop in Chennai which is owned by a minister named Neethi (Sunil Reddy) and start shooting innocent customers. While one woman is taken hostage, the rest of the gang escapes in a van. Post gang escape they shoot the woman too and leave her on the highway. Nevertheless, the girl survives and the minister and the cops are eagerly waiting for her to wake so they could scoop somewhere on the gang. Kathir (Jai) the main character of the movie tries to find the gang and get his vengeance. He loses a beloved during the robbery and now it is personal. ‘Yenni Thuniga’ is a story on how one man overcomes all odds with bravery and takes revenge on the men who murdered his family.
Just like in previous movies, Jai Fazal is emotionally committed to his character, and his performance is especially remarkable in romance and fight scenes. Athulya Ravi, cast as Jai’s girlfriend Nandana, has also performed well, while Anjali Nair as the wife of one of the victims is just passable. Vamshi Krishna plays a no-nonsense, stereotypical villain, and Vidya Pradeep joins him in maleficence. Sunil Reddy, who plays the minister, is at once comical and terrifying.
Several of these conflicts are resolved with one masterstroke before the interval the revelation of the girl. The subsequent twists, along with the villains betraying one another, are thankfully fresh. In the beginning, the romantic undertones between Jai and Athulya are promising. Who would not be interested when a guy tries to woo a girl he rejected in college? Compared with the first half, the second half has a higher action rate and is more entertaining.
On the other hand the movie starts off, quite interestingly in the USA where some villains are after rare diamonds which they learn is in Chennai. After that the action shifts to Chennai but after that the us villain never takes any action to explain his presence in the movie. Romantic songs are situated at the wrong timings which makes the already spiralling screenplay much more boring. It is evident that there is no one with a meaningful character and all of their intentions are suspicious and so it becomes problematic to follow any of them.
Sam CS can not help but provide some cogent background score with such huge number of buildup shots for the hero and the villain. Rather the other technical components are passable. Rain of Arrows has provided decent production value to the project shot in USA and Chennai. Writer-director S.K. Vettriselvan has conceptualized an idea which has all the potential to morphe into a marvelous action thriller but his writing and execution is so average that it has deprived the movie of its richness.
