In the closing stage of WWII, an effort to develop the ultimate weapon capable of controlling sharks is set to work by the Third Reich but is stopped and destroyed. Now, sixty years later, an unknown beast settles into a small ocean town, a beast has been put together and brought to life using the most savage killers in the ocean The Sharkenstein Monster!

After viewing the 6-headed shark attack, I found it thoroughly entertaining, despite its many issues. I was hoping Sharkenstein would also possess similar entertaining features. Unfortunately, it had a totally absurd storyline, which makes it devoid of the good elements needed to gain a cult following. Sadly, I was not that fortunate.

The story started with the Nazis putting a stop to an experiment with sharks and attempting to weaponize them. The likely reason behind the experiment is part of a more sinister agenda of creating soldiers out of dead bodies, much like Frankenstein’s monster. Anything and everything regarding the experiment seems to have been wiped out, but different factions were able to get their hands on the assets. Fast forward to the present and a crazed scientist, Klaus, has stolen the heart and brain used in the experiment and preserved them. He has some outlandish plans like implanting the heart, and brain into his own creation. His creation is a shark that is made from the pieces of different sharks. Klaus’s creation is now rampaging an ocean-side town.

It is one of those movies where I wish that I could just type ‘It’s crap’ multiple times and leave it there. Not only is that a complete waste of my time, having to devote more thought to this dumpster fire of a movie more than it deserves, but I feel like it would instruct it perfectly. Yes, it has a certain weakness, but fundamentally, ‘it’s crap’ encapsulates the overall Sharkenstein experience the best. And it doesn’t stop there, it is not the silly kind of fun crap that you level up to then kick back and have a few chuckles and move on with your day. It is the sort of garbage that makes you question everything. Where did I go wrong? Why did I subject myself to this and how did I end up in this predicament in the first place?

Some characters are not well developed while some are just downright awful. It is quite laughable, however, that the two characters who fall into the latter category are played by actors who are evidently too old into portraying roles of a couple of frat boys. With a pair of 35-year-old men who think they can play 22-year-olds, it becomes increasingly difficult to suspend your disbelief. It definitely does not help that the entire cast is devoid of thesps. I will say that a few did possess a glimmer of talent that could have surfaced in abundance, but unfortunately, they did not have a competent director to work with. They most likely still would have been bad, but I would have forgiven “bad” over “dreadful.” The greatest offense was the lead character of the movie, a small town cop portrayed by Ken Van Sant. Van Sant possessed the charm of a frozen chicken and even less expressiveness. There’s absolutely nothing interesting about him, which is an enormous issue considering how much screen time he has.

Most of the special effects came in the form of CGI which looked like an MS Paint rendition. I understand that the filmmakers had a limited budget to work with, but this is another case where if they couldn’t at least get any effects to look halfway believable then maybe they should have not used those particular shots at all. Or at least show some creativity and do something different to get what they want. There are a lot of movies that had very few resources that managed to have special effects that looked impressive, after all. Of course, the people who did that actually had real talent. This group of filmmakers didn’t seem to want to actually try to do something decent or lacked the capabilities to. It felt like they just wanted to make something fast and cheap. If this is the case, then it’s not surprisingthat Sharkenstien has one of the lamest-looking shark monsters I‘ve seen.
