Storage units or storage facilities as one may call them can hold a number of surprises, most of which are unwelcome or will irritate you for weeks to no end. However, it should be noted that for such a dull place, movies based on storage units or perhaps even revolving around them feature only 2 genres most of the time: entertainment-wise, it’s usually a horror or a thriller. No one in their right mind will ever create a rom-com set entirely on a storage unit with some unscrupulous characters and an easily predictable plot. However, it was at least entertaining. It’s forgivable that Andy Tennant’s Unit 234: The Lock Up was located within such a dull and bland area as the film itself is simply intriguing enough to brush that off.

Laurie, who owns a privately owned storage space that was previously run by her parents almost all their lives, finds herself in a foreboding situation after her plans fail to go as intended. Upon discovering an unconscious man, who claims to own a storage unit, locked inside unit 234, Laurie begins to suspect a persistent stranger who is continuing to seek her out. A Joan Clayton kidney thief, the man found in unit 234, is cuffed to a gurney. In this case, Laurie has to defend herself from an organized crime group who are quite willing to kill in order to get Clayton back.

Unit 234 is rather dull until it shifts into an intense chase around the storage unit, as most thrillers do. The setting presents strengths and at the same time some exasperating disadvantages which force Laurie to use her wits to a limited extent to outsmart the gang members. Strangely and fortunately, not only are we treated to a highly disturbing notion of why and how Clayton was in a body bag with a missing kidney, as well as references to organ trade, but the film’s narrative shifts to a relentless pace and does not look back. There are a few instances when the viewers can pause and listen to Laurie’s back story or even from the designated feisty character played by Don Johnson, but these slightly more dramatic episodes only serve to enhance the weak storyline. From the time that the ‘package’ (Clayton) enters the storage, the tension mounts all the way toward the climax where Laurie has to battle for her life. Given the organization of the premise and the weakness of the core plot, it is actually very innovative and refreshing to be able to develop both the characters and the plot at the same time.

The aspect that let the film down is that there was a twist or an epiphany close to the 3rd act that was there for the sake of it. This particular revelation is built up in some way or the other, but this seems to come towards the end of events in the film.

The performances are okay, given the thin casting, yet it is Isabelle Fuhrman in the role of Laurie who is the most appealing. So convincing that this character placed herself in the storage unit and it gradually consumed her entire existence. She has also demonstrated her action film performance; however, it’s a pity not more scope has been provided to her in terms of such ranges.

In the end, Unit 234 turns out to be a captivating, suspenseful, and thrilling film at the same time. Who would have imagined that a page turner type of novel can be found within the setting of a storage facility?
