In “L’immensita” directed by Emanuele Crialese, the narrative revolves around the struggles that a family goes through when one of their members happens to be transgender. The storyline also revolves around Penelope Cruz’s role as the mother and the impact of her star-like charisma on her child. Andrea who played the role of Luana Giuliani portrays deadly rage towards his mother as she exclaims “Can you stop being so beautiful?” when trying to escape cat-called men.

Cruz who plays the role of a mother of three, set against an Italian backdrop quite enjoys managing her kids and is portrayed in that manner. During one of the scenes, she is accentuated while directing her kids to set the table. But then again, one cannot deny that life is not as picturesque as shown, Family life at times can be suffocating and overwhelming. Her husband on the other hand on the contrary is always depicted from the beginning as a selfish person and struggles to survive without cheating on his wife with other women.

The mother wishes the son still identified as a girl, so her name is now Andrea, which is simply an over-sympathetic term for someone being raised as a boy. Besides being raised strictly as a boy, Andrea’s father begins to raise issues with that too, resulting in a loss of respect from his peers and even from his family. Andrea goes through that trauma regardless of her mother’s concerns.

Now, considering she is in a far-needed position, she lives in shanties where there are quite a few reeds. Andrea comes across this woman named Sara enjoys whom loves to spend time with, and she provides security to Andreas.

L’immensita on the other hand tells the story of Andreas, but not in a way which is constrained to the use of characters in a plot. This means that the portrayal of the scenario is done in a free format. One of the events was when Andrea’s father persuaded his secretary to get an abortion, thus putting their quite complex family into shambles. In this specific scene, whilst the abortion is being performed, Andrea is simply eavesdropping away from everything which is quite an awkward choice to do, as what is happening is pretty clear.

However, one can roughly grasp the way the director attempts to direct the film. It is about one’s perception of time and occurrences in circumstances unique to the individual.

Andrea certainly has enough motivations for her to seek an exit from the real world and she does so during the movie’s occasional sparkling black-and-white musical sequences. First she, along with Clara, dances to the engaging numb “Prisencolinensinainciusol”, a song by Italian pop artist, Adriano Celentano, which is best described as the title being a parody of English. Later on, the character’s mother and her son individually ‘perform’ the song which is rather well known in the United States as the theme of Love Story. The film’s name too, is the title of an Italian song of that genre Pop Goes Italy which, as expected, doesn’t suit the film or the time it lasts.

Despite Giuliani being an outstanding actress, the bated breath was once again due to her broad, saucer-like gaze, which is best suited for depicting trust and disdain. But the film was designed as their character focused on Cruz. More than likely, this was the concept however, the footage put together could provide an entirely different direction than what was intended. The actress’s luminosity is also sufficient, if not the best incentive to go watch it in the theaters.
