The documentary film Lover Stalker Killer is directed by Sam Hobkinson, and its central focus is a bizarre three-way romance and murder that began with an auto mechanism called Dave Kroupa posting his information on a dating website Plenty Of Fish. This gruesome love story unfolded in the states of Nebraska and Iowa.Â
The Gist: When Kroupa in Omaha, he had recently gone through a divorce from his ex-girlfriend Amy Flora and had two kids with Flora. Kroupa had been divorced for several years and he was on the search for a woman for an informal relationship. He then met Liz Goylar through a dating website, whom he established a loose relationship with for a few months. Then Dave met Cari, who went to his garage to have her car inspected. A few weeks after that, Dave saw Cari on the dating website and they dated. Cari was also casual and Dave thought it wouldn’t be bad, and since he and Liz weren’t committed, he had no qualms about dating two girls.
After a couple of weeks, Liz met up with Cari at Dave’s apartment when she came over to collect some personal belongings. Shortly after that brief meeting, Dave received a message from Cari claiming they should move in together. When he didn’t say yes, saying that he would have to be casual, indeed, Cari right away started sending him vulgar, threatening text messages. Almost immediately that upgraded to threats about Liz and her showing proof of stalking him. The detective in charge of this case from Omaha was trying to catch Dave’s stalker on the spot but she was never able to locate her.
At the same time, Cari’s mother, who resided just to the north side of the state border in Pottawattamie County in Iowa, lost contact with him and she accordingly filed for a missing person’s report. However, since there was still contact with Doug in terms of threatening texts and emails, the police believed that she was simply hiding.
Not long after, Doug started receiving messages indicating that she was inside Liz’s house. The stalking and threats peaked with a fire that was set to Liz’s house. After this, both Liz and Doug left. A year later, investigators from the Pottawattamie County police who got the case and really looked into the emails and texts brought the case a twist no one would ever have thought.
Performance Worth Watching Doug Kroupa was not only one of the major people that Hobkinson interviewed but he was portrayed in the fully developed artistic reconstructions that the director did. He actually goes overboard in better detail of his paranoia during the reconstructions than in most interview segments given his relativistic stance during them.
Memorable Dialogue Special deputy of the Pottawattamie County\’s police, Tony Kava, working with the staffing and the digital evidence for the investigations mentions while pouring Soylent in his Thermos, “I don’t know if it’s clear, but I’m apparently on the spectrum. That makes sense when you see that every day I drink the same thing. I think it authors the investigations and everything else.
As we said, however, Hobkinson kept a fairly simple and direct presentation of the case that is at the core of Lover, Stalker, and Killer. The reenactments surrounding Kroupa were the only aesthetic concession and there was a purpose for including those. In some instances, a director includes editorial in the form of document footage or photographs taken of other reports and in this instance, most of the events had happened below the media spotlight. So, the only means available in order to demonstrate exactly what was happening, and increase the suspense, was to undertake these research reenactments.
Hobkinson, however, focused on stylistic devices a little higher when the narrative description himself is so twisted, however, that she really didn’t have too much more work in that regard in the aims to make it interesting. In this first fragmented part of the movie that precedes the investigation there are three of them Kava, Jim Doty, and Ryan Avis based in Pottawattamie County, who are supposed to solve the case; Towards the beginning of the film Hobkinson manages to create an impression that it is Kroupa who has been targeted stalked and terrorized by Cari; However, he has shown just enough details in his shots to suggest that this is not the case. Therefore, it is easy to understand the final twist it comes down hard on you, although you anticipated it, at least to some extent.
Once that twist comes out, the only thing you care about is how the case ends, and what we found amazing was the lengths to which the Pottawattamie County detectives went in order to secure the evidence that would eventually lead to the arrest of their suspect.
The one thing that could have made the presentation more interesting from our perspective is the absence of a certain degree of introspection and analysis from an Omaha PD detective which is not quite the case who forgot so many things that the Pottawattamie County detectives remembered a few years later. But it’s a minor irritation in what is otherwise a good and quick-paced movie.
