Compared to the big-studio animated films such as DreamWorks Animation’s “Bee Movie” or any other computer animated films featuring insects, Maya is not very ambitious. However, exhausted parents may find contentment in this film due to its lack of overly exaggerated action. Unlike other blockbuster animated films, this animation does include jokes, but not the constant irritating voices or pop-culture relics that accompany these types of films.
The bees from the book are back but this time they introduce a new villain, Buzzlina Von Beena (Jacki Weaver who was Oscar-nominated for “Animal Kingdom”). The lackluster and monotonous casting of the book really shocked me. Not to mention, Buzzlina and her slave Stella Crawley (Noah Taylor) are my absolute favorite combination from the book series. Whilst attempting to overthrow the queen, Buzzlina steals the royal jelly and drives Maya out of the hive, enabling her to vanish from her safe space. It really provided a sense of anticipation and thrill to the already captivating story. I now find myself waiting upon the next installment of the book eagerly. Maya’s forced exile from the protected hive makes prospects for exciting adventures arise.
It really is bizarre, I swear half the time I’m picking what book to read based on the level of Shenanigans or Chaotic evil I expect my favorite characters to cause. One thing is for certain though set poor set design does tended to lower my expectations and set Buzzlina type characters seem to be riddled throughout. At first they might seem to lack personality like the rest of the characters, but underestimating from the term ‘sneaky’ set my expectations far lower.
Maya looks around and asks herself: “Where do I fit in?”. She does not seem to take much pleasure with the numbered bees being partitioned to certain areas after their births. Meh. Out of all the kidpic dilemmas to understand, this one does not appeal to the intended children at all, who would be far more curious about how Maya’s interactions with the creatures she encounters outdoors goes. There are encounters with the dung beetles, Aardman-style ants, and a young hornet who goes by Sting (Joel Franco) that allows Maya to redeem herself against the long-existing battle with the black and yellow striped hornets.
All considered, Alexs Stadermann (who began his career by making sub-tailored sequels for Disney’s straight-to-video markets) has, in trying to give parents nothing to complain about, achieved little for them to get excited about aside from the prospect of Paleozoic sharing Maya with an entire new generation of preschoolers. The film has already earned over 6 million dollars in Germany and over one million in another half a dozen places. Unlike the U.S. distributor Shout! Factory, who will not make anywhere close to that money for the US, it will make much more as a catalog title, so it will bzzz.
