Sarah, also known as Eleonora Saravalle, is an introverted college student who is navigating life after a breakup. She decides to celebrate her birthday with a friends’ reunion party at her step father’s quite remote cabin located a few hours drive from Los Angeles. Her friend, Connie Caemmerer, has a new boyfriend who is a plying musician named Matt, and she drags him along to the party. Sarah’s friends have their own expectations from the trip, which are vastly different from what Sarah had planned. To make matters worse, Sarah’s ex boyfriend is a part of Matt’s wild friends that are invited as well which, well, …. this whole situation is really awkward.
What contributes to this awkwardness is the fact that Sarah’s step brother, Jacey, and his rather stoic girlfriend, Tala, show up to the cabin completely uninvited. Their attempt to use the cabin as an escape weekend also disrupts every-one jon the plan. gauge interest in escape weeks at.
Then, under the full moon … the guests of the party began vanishing mysteriously. The pattern in which they disappeared seemed to reflect a game the friends had discovered in the cabin, witch stories told by a werewolf. Someone – or something – appeared to be following them in the shadows. Paw like prints with blood streaks were everywhere; wolfish imprints which raised questions. Was it the exotic herbs the friends consumed before nightfall or were they being hunted down and slaughtered by some mystical phantom?
As the Village Sleeps is a well done horror-thriller produced by Chloë Bellande, the screenplay penned by Terry Spears. While the budget was not substantial, the film did well with the location with the cast of attractive young people desperately trying to survive. Spears is smart, always filming around the monster, never showing the body of a werewolf or even the skeletal remains of the victims. Effective horror should excite the mind, unlike poor attempts at gory make-up which are sure to disappoint. There are moments of thrust that are exhilarating which makes the viewer remember The Blair Witch Project adventure.
The actors give a commendable performace in trying to depict the characters in a unique way as they go severly insane (and possibly to death). Each one of the young adults applies to broad slasher types. There’s a loudmouth midlander (Matt), a surviving female character (Sarah), a couple of male friends, some extra buddies who are purely there to be killed, and some comedic reliefs. That said, this is not a criticism towards Village which attempts to make use of the slasher subgenre in a clever fashion. There’s a reason why they work.
