Harmon directed this film back in 1993 and it did not really perform well in the box offices. Van Damme was on the peak of his career while at the same time, nowhere to run was released. In terms of earnings, the film sank below the expected mark. However, squezzing the action sequences did not make much sense for the character at the time.
In the movie, Van Damme portrays a prisoner named Sam Gillen who whilst he is being moved between prisons in a bus, is rescued by his former criminal partner who gets shot and killed by a police officer looking down a scoped rifle. Apparently, Sam is able to find the money that was set aside for him and goes on the run. He makes a small camp for himself near a lake in the northwestern area of the country. What he doesn’t realize, but soon finds out, is that the land he is on belongs to Clydie Anderson, a widow with two young children, Mookie and Bree. She is portrayed by Rosanna Arquette.
The Andersons find out who Sam is and while Clydie is initially annoyed with him, he quickly earns her respect by going out of his way to beat up henchmen who are working for a corrupt property developer named Franklin Hale, which is, incidentally, where the Joss Ackland mini cameo comes in. Clydie’s land is right in the middle of the parcel of land he would like to construct on, so he is determined to do anything to get her out. Since there is no way she is selling to him – he starts getting into the rough stuff – like hiring an ex cop, Mr. Dunston aka Ted Levine to deal with her once and for all. The closer Sam and Clydie become, with him taking on a father figure role to the kids, Dunston and his goons are tightening the noose around them and are ready to do anything to ensure Hale gets what he wants.
Nowhere To Run may not be the fastest paced movie Van Damme has ever made but it is definitively the most unique. It is definitely overly cliched as well as predictable in a few domains. However, it is still entertaining for fans of van Damme since once it starts to gain momentum, the ending is very satisfactory. Additionally, Van Damme gives a good lead performance and, in fact, it is the better half of the equally divided representation of the story. Van Damm’s on-screen chemistry with Arquette is significantly better than with many of the other female cast Van Damm had been working with up untill this point in his career. He is also believable with the children in the movie, which is rather incredible. This is the movie where Van Damme develops genuine acting skills. He still needs time to step up and showcase more than just his astonishing flexibility or his face kicking abilities, but it is fascinating to watch the beginning of his development.
Admittedly, this film relies more on drama than his other films but the required Van Dammeisms such as tough talking dialogue, corny one-liners, and bone crushing violence are present. This film is exactly what you’d expect from a Van Damme film made in the mid-nineties but with some cool vintage Triumph motorcycle stunts added into the mix. They just take a bit longer than usual to show up in the film, that is all. The movie also includes a love scene where he is seen naked and even has some decent action scenes.
