Should this film even be rated? A Wife’s Nightmare is a film from lifetme that played on the W network, which is a channel for women. Considering my wife is currently on maternity leave, she is “forced” to consume such contents. I happen to be there when she had this on, and to be quite honest, the characters and storyline instantly grabbed my focus. Not for the most positive reasons, which I will add is for laughter of how everything is so badly executed.

Liz has just come back home from her recent mental breakdown and is welcomed by her loving husband, an introverted son, and a young woman that she has never seen before. This animated woman claims to be her husbands daughter who he has taken in. She tries to make the best out of a bad situation by trying to embrace Caitlin as kids do with step-parents. Things become strange for Liz when she notices a very intense sexual affection between her husband and his daughter and that is where her investigation begins.

I’m not going to bother wrapping this in spoiler tags, but let me start off by saying that I highly doubt anyone will be watching the movie so here are some major plot points.

Given that this is a lifetime film, you know that anything and everything about this movie is going to feel corny. The camera work is basic and unbelievably dull, accompanied by a lighting scheme that you would see in daytime soap operas. There was no attempt to change the lighting in the film to show Liz’s paranoia. To assist in the dullness, the acting also served to be quite poor. Liz is played by Jennifer Beals, a one hit wonder who is mostly known for dumping cold water on herself while dancing. Beals literally has a confused and blank look on her face throughout every scene. Not only does she have a very generic confused and blank expression on her face, but she also pauses awkwardly as though she is trying to recall her lines. Such poor acting immediately reminds you that this is indeed a lifetime film and nothing more.

One of the scenes of the movie shows the family members gathered around the dining table. Everyone raises a glass to toast Caitlin for landing a new job. Unfortunately, Caitlin ends up spilling wine all over her chest and the father quickly snatches a dishcloth to dab it off. He is a bit too free at touching his daughter’s chest and this is noticed by Liz. Their son AJ looks like he is too busy being an introvert so he is seemingly unaware of the situation. Fast forward, Caitlin helps AJ get over his shyness by asking him to ask a girl out. To make things more awkward, AJ kisses Caitlin during the heat of the moment.

So, who is this girl? And why is her father so obsessed with her chest and getting jealous over a guy her age complimenting her? For any sane person, it is quite clear that she is his daughter and the “sexual” relationship that Liz imagines is purely fictitious. She is, in fact, still suffering from her mental breakdown and needs to be committed. In his head, he is incapable of handling so much stress and wants to get a divorce from her so that he can continue to have a “physical” relationship with his 18 year old daughter.

Yes, They Are Having Relations. No need to worry though, she is not his daughter, she’s just a girl he is willing to leave his wife for. The cunning plan was to make her delusional again so he can divorce her and live with his son and “daughter” while still maintaining his secret relationship with her. How he expected to keep this going for however many years is beyond me. Oh, did I mention the film is loosely based on a true story? I should have known it could be worse.

The film uses this shocking jump in the middle of the sentence, and for some reason, none of these seem to correlate. Blunt shift in action periods where poop hits the fan. People have begun to erupt, unintentional comedy by fighting. There is no way to put it more politely but the story revolves around the father’s affair. The father had committed adultery. The kid, “daughter” is just his step daughter. celebs gossip entirely focus on those step children as “daughters” implying that people don’t have separation norms. It is as if this entire world is distorted. A Wife’s Nightmare is my nightmare too.
