Want to escape the dreariness of today’s troublesome world? Searching for something engaging that will give you a hearty laugh? Then, there is a movie featured in Tubi that I think is perfect. Wild Boys is about the life of Kate, a recluse who seldom leaves her house. Her father takes care of her needs that require her to venture outside. After his death, Kate is compelled to leave her comfort zone in order to participate in a treasure hunting competition which is a condition of his will. The wilderness is where the treasure is hidden and there she encounters two people who get her embroiled in an adventure. They trek through the wilderness searching for clues while trying to evade a government agent with a conspiracy theory agenda. During her search, she uncovers an inner strength she never knew she had.
Wild Boys is a lighthearted but sensitive comedy that I would unintentionally place next to the 80s adventure movies and the praise is deserved. Morten Forland, the director, has a clear agenda as he keeps the pace fast. Humor in the film revolves around self-growth and self-discovery. Concepts like friendship, grief, responsibility, and politics are also included and are portrayed in a positive manner. Although the jokes and gimmicks were not outright funny, they put some smiles on me. Apart from wild boys, the other characters are stereotypes that Kate encounters, from backwoods moonshiners, and the tenderhearted sheriff, to a rather eccentric classmate of hers who becomes infatuated with Kate. I can understand why planning the treasure hunt would be something Kate’s father would carry out. The clues and places were both imaginative and plausible.
Kate has been perfectly portrayed by Kate Frampton Davis. The story centers on whether the audience cares to root for her and, trust me, you will. The film is about watching her transform from a socially awkward recluse who wouldn’t leave the house unless there was a video game console to an end-of-the-line strong risk-taking adventurer. We do see her step outside her comfort zone guided by the instinct to protect and take care of her new friends, the Wild Boys. Davis makes Kate endearing by her performance. The Wild Boys are Red, played by Vincent Catalina, and Johndeer, played by Jordan Laemmlen. These two were my absolute favorite characters. I think Catalina and Laemmlen worked well together. Those characters had far more dimensions than I expected them to have. While we are not given much of their back story, it is not hard to assume that these two decided to stay in the wilderness at some point in their youth and never looked back. The bond these two characters share is so strong that you can feel it in the air. Their interaction with Kate was such a delight because the contrast between the pair and Kate made for some funny and tender moments at the same time.
Wild Boys is a lighthearted joyous comedy that focuses on the family and is packed with one’s entertainment needs.
Some viewers might feel put off by the absence of the origins of the Wild Boys, but as the film depicts, the beauty is more in the journey than oh the destination. Speaking of the destination, the ending of the film did not go down a path that was predictable as you might expect. The movie came complete with the story and was quite refreshing. Many of these reasons are why I think this is worthy of your time, especially during this time of year when friends and family come together for the holidays.
