Resident Evil Vendetta brilliantly combines jump scares, horror elements, and the sprightliness of animated action movies. It does not need to be defended – it is the best of the three animated films. Vendetta is the best Resident Evil film there is
Directors Alexander Von David and Takanori Tsujimoto accurately apply their skills from action movies, and feed them to the Resident Evil universe, which was overdue for some time.
David and Tsujimoto add real horror elements with the abundance of jump scares that escalate the film to a new height. They understand how to use the key components that every Resident Evil movie has – highly trained heroes, a psychotic villain, unlimited zombies, and even special zombie creations. There are clever costumes from the video games and even a cameo at the mansion. Paul W.S. Anderson, the director and writer of the live action versions of Resident Evil, understood skeletons of the franchise, but never knew how to set it in motion.
John Wick is a great example of a fight scene which is not only easy to understand but also eye catching. With Vendetta on the other hand, we are forced to deal with an overwhelming number of flesh-eating zombies that single handedly raise the action of Vendetta to unmatched heights.
Vendetta’s plot however, manages to remain intact. The makoto Fukami script develops an agenda for the villain that has been missing for years since the animated films. For instance, the antagonist Glenn Arias of Vendetta has tangible motives that make him more engaging than an umbrella agent. His ideology stems from a perspective where wanting to eradicate humanity with a biohazard is legit, which makes us question the morality of it. To put the cherry on top, Arias a terrifyingly strong fighter accompanied by frequent outbursts of insanity.
Chris Redfeild and Leon Kennedy, two major characters from the game come together to fight for humanity. Chris single handedly fights against deals that have the intention of creating Bio Organic Weapons. On the other hand, Leon is riddled with existential thoughts and is hesitant to come back into the fight. The duo is forced to work when Rebecca Chambers discloses that some virus has the potential to kill thousands.
To some extent, it is hard to understand that this is not a real movie. The stubble, hair, and movement of the characters, as well as their stubble and hair movements, are so realistic, one can easily get lost in it. Furthermore, the synchronization with the mouths is perfect too, which in many cases, has proven to be an issue with CGI films. In the action scenes, Vendetta blurs the distinction between reality and CGI.
My only concern would be the missing Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield. I guess the script was not strong enough to accommodate four major characters, but it is regrettable that they could not enjoy the action here.
Resident Evil Vendetta captures the video game highlights of the previous games and turns it into a thrilling experience. The best elements of it are the fourth and fifth installments.
