During World War II, Nazi Captain Gemmler wants a special chemical formula that will enhance the efficiency of normal gasoline. In his search for this formula, he meets two people that he thinks would be useful and who are already working on this. Using his hidden agents, Gemmler has them kidnapped and the murdered when they can’t assist him. He then shifts his focus to two others that are much closer to the situation; the chemist and socialite Tom Fielding, and his colleague Robert Norton who is engaged to Tom’s sister, Nancy.

One day, an unassuming Tom visits a local tavern and gets into a conversation with a Polish refugee, Linda Pavlo. Tom has now trouble at work as he was late the following day. Robert warned him to be cautious of such meeting. Now Franklyn Prescott, the president of the chemical company where they work, receives a visit from government agent James Curtis, who informs him of a recent double homicide at another chemical plant. Prescott does not seem to be too bothered but begins by saying that the plant is working with one half of the precious formula, whereas the East Coast plant is working on the other half. Curtis now has to deliver the bad news: The east coast plant has been destroyed and there was an internal sabotage. One of the chemists, George Pembroke, who worked at the plant was a Nazi supporter and used the name Karl Schmidt, has claimed the formula.

When Tom and Robert return to the same tavern, Curtis’ agents follow them there. Tom meets Linda once more, and after some pleasantries, he is taken to the room where he would meet Gemmler. The worst part is when Gemmler says: ‘I will hurt your mother and your sister Nancy if you do not play along and get me the formula. Otherwise, there will be severe consequences. When Tom leaves the tavern that night, he notices once again he is being followed, this time by one of Curtis’ men, but one of Gemmler’s spies, under the disguise of a blind beggar, shoots the agent.

The next day, Prescott and Curtis break the news to Robert and lay out their theory that he has in fact murdered the agent in an act of betrayal to France. Robert does not believe it, claiming Tom is an innocent lad. Little do they know that Tom’s sister Nancy has been eavesdropping on their whole conversation. When Curtis and Prescott have left, Tom and Robert talk about the situation more in depth. Later that night, Tom meets with Linda once again at the bar, and to his surprise, she is ready to give him 100,000 dollars in exchange for the formula.

After Tom’s meeting with Linda, he, Robert, and Nancy band together and try to eliminate the Nazi spies once and for all. Tom goes to retrieve the formula from the chemical plant and hands it to Robert. He bring the formula to his meeting with Linda and is later escorted to Gemmler’s office. Out of nowhere, Tom barges in and starts demanding payment, which ends with Gemmler offering no payment at all. Robert’s lights are also turned off by Gemmler’s goons. The goons take Tom to the airport where Karl Schmidt, Gemmler’s contact, is arriving on ‘the Dawn Express’.

Tom and his associates are being followed by government agents but unfortunately, the agents are happening to be arriving late, which means that Gemmler is able to escape to the airport before being seized. Still, they are able to detain Linda and some other aides still remaining in Gemmler’s office. Once at the airport, Gemmler hurries Tom into the waiting plane, which lifts off. While they are somewhere in the insecure middle zone, Schmidt decides now is the time to test the formula. Since Tom is well aware that the future of his family alongside the resort is in dire danger, he purposefully packed an unstable mixture to blend in with chemistry Schmidt’s ingredients. The plane went down, and with it, all onboard. Tom knew what he was doing. He saved his family at the expense of his life.
