The examples of television programs and films about fan conventions and other related things are astonishing, the list can stretch from Kinvig, Amazing Stories, Galaxy Quest, Free Enterprise, Cruise of the Gods, Fanboys, My Sucky Teen Romance, Mindhorn, and others, each with a touch of humor and a bit of warmth. This is very well possible because geek culture is pretty close to being mainstream, there will be a lot of these. This one doesn’t add much. Supercon is an underlying version of this sort of thing, which happens to come out at just the wrong moment, being directed by Zak Knutson and co-scripted by Andy Sipes and Dana Snyder. Also, the excellent documentary Milius.
Its antagonist is Adam King (Clancy Brown), a has-been TV personality overshadowed by his egotism, who is a few fries short of a Happy Meal. He charges too much money for his world apart from business, such as paedophiles on underage interns and autographing books after tearing out the pages. King embodies the episodically remembered ill will towards William Shatner who once uttered ‘get a life’ in a pretence ‘satirical’ context. Obsession with fame has always had its’ price but for King, fame is everything and his tragic but slightly authoritative existence is a testament to what life does to you when you have spent too much time idolizing mass media. To an extent he is a character many people can relate to but lets get something straight, he is far removed from the English-speaking world. Everything has been in limbo after Shatner publicly mocked himself on multiple occasions including in the Free Company Enterprises. This is a wee bit shocking but at some level make sense. What I do perceive weird is how the general idiot is too occupied watching selfie videos on YouTube to notice that they have become an archaic civilization that idolizes Free Company Enterprises rather than embracing the idea of a space-forward utopia. Instead, they spend their time wishing that Handmaid’s Tale was the peak of Earth. Before I begin with my further analysis on how pore actors targeted to play super aficionados such ‘ladies’, I should finish talking about fanboys angry because of the Last Jedi the never-ending issue of the poor puppies where people get split between one side being gurdoned with angry non-comical super fan basher. Cheers! Let’s not mention the unimaginable scandal over Gamergate.
Long queues for autographs or photos are amusing and this does incidentally serve as a pot-shot on the big-ticket conventions, but this feels much more like a contribution to the whining than anything else.
King, perennial guest star of Tex Johnson US Marshall, is the headliner of the Supercon as King’s shifty associate Gil Bartell (Mike Epps) has orchestrated. the uninhibited, annoyed second-stringers include Johnson’s kid sidekick Keith Mahar (Russell Peters), voice actor turned glass-ceilinged mat at Matt Wheeler (Ryan Kwanten), yesteryear bald alpha Brock Hutchinson (Brooks Braselton), and McNeely (Maggie Grace) stoner Newbury (John Malkovich), all have grievances with Kings and Bartell’s. After a ton of spot gags in the Kevin Smith style, a plot is uncovered as the bilking band of misfits concoct a scheme to steal the cash King has hidden from the taxman. Oh, yes, they also happen to use anime cosplay outfits to conceal themselves. Perhaps the biggest problem with the film is that the only cast member who truly gives his all is Brown. This means that the baddy, who we finally see dramatically reduced to shouting into a webcam ‘fuck the fans’ on youtube clips. council does so much more entertaining than the rest of the unlikable, peevish ‘heroes’ that are supposed to balance the sympathy the scales are tilted around the wrong way.
