Mike McCall and Tim McCall are brothers and co-owners of a very big cattle ranch located in a valley in Arizona. When his father constructed the ranch, he built a dam on the river located on their land that created Spirit Lake. Because of this reservoir, the McCalls have legal rights to all the water in the valley. This land surrounding the ranch is owned by business partners LeRoy Stanton and Stanley Cox, who now start to sell it off to different settlers from Indiana and Illinois. But when the settlers come, they find everything completely dry due to the dam, and their unhappiness puts Stanton and Cox’s plans to profit from development in the local town at risk since they also own most of the land there. Settler John Dawson and his daughter Connie Dawson go to complain to Sheriff Aaron Ball about the water but there is no legal fix to the issue. Connie is irritated by McCall’s very much and so are most of the neighbors who want to be friendly with her rather peaceful father. But after some time, she and Tim start to develop feelings for one another.

Now, Stanton makes plans to destroy the McCalls. First, he orders his men to rob the local bank. Next, he places a deposit in the same bank to help it stay open and gain leverage over the bank’s owner, T.J. Furman. After this is accomplished, he plans to stampede the McCalls‘ cattle herd, as well as blow up the Spirit Lake dam to eliminate the Mcalls’ only source of income and restore water flow in the valley. After this, Stanton will force Furman to call in a $30,000 loan which the McCalls took out with him. This will bankrupt the McCalls for certain. Some settlers angry about the McCalls’ control over water willingly help Stanton carry out his plans and attempt to get the McCalls into legal trouble.

Stanton’s henchmen are placing bombs along the dam when Tim encounters them and is subsequently murdered. Stanton is suspicious that Furman is weak and has him executed. But before the murder, Furman overhears Stanton articulate the imminent destruction of the McCall ranch. Furman is flooded by the guilt of betraying Mike, so he goes to the pub to ease his conscience. There he makes hints about the conspiracy to Varick. Varick presumably had previously spoken with Sheriff Ball, because once Furman speaks of his hints he explains how it relates to Ian’s deception and what Ian is concretely planning to do. In the end, they reach at a conclusion together. Varick hints that the new revelations may be too late and even to ponder the feelings of Mike and Cop. Furman is the mid-point of hero and villain, so losing his senses and killing Furman transforms him into an out-and-out villain. Furman additionally implies that the death of McCall’s cattle does not only mean the demise of McCall but the entire family as well. Stanton has his henchmen murder all the cattle by painfully thrusting them off a dripping cliff. In a twist of miscalculations, Stanton fails and discovers the dam intact, which leaves him angry and confused because he expected it to be blown up. In a final confrontation after each side fails to gain the upper hand, Stan gets knocked unconscious and submerged underwater until Mike relinquishes his hand. Alone, Mike is completely disregarded as Montgomery Smith. Contemplating Spirit Lake with Cop drives him to the conclusion that everything that has taken place could only vanish if the river remained intact.

He tears down the dam and lets the river loose before vowing to begin a new chapter with Connie in the valley.
