The indie sci-fi movie “Kill Switch” is the worst type of science fiction ever made. It does not deliver a theme that touches the viewer in the heart or the mind but rather relies on a central gimmick to keep the viewer entertained. In this case, we explore an alternate earth as experienced by Will Porter, a cypher whose personality is devoid of most attributes. In simpler words, Porter is an ex-astronaut who is trying to save earth from an evil mega corporation.

If you have played contemporary video games, you would know that Smit loves to use a first-person subjective lens. Many of them are being revealed through the perspective of the main character. But like in last year’s “Hardcore Henry,” action blockbusters and games have become more prominent and are presumably building an appetite for more video game like media. The thrill of being projected into a completely alien world the viewer has never experienced is still new. It is important to note, however, that Kill Switch is hypothetical, and it appears to be poorly stitched together from other superior films and it fails to explain what is intriguing about other movies and ideas.

Will’s character portrays several ill-fated choices during “Kill Switch.” Some of the major decisions made by Will character in the film brings forth several concerns regarding sanity as well as a person’s multi-dimensional traits. Yes, they do guarantee his family’s safety as long as he agrees to perform a mission that includes a series of unexplained instructions. Also, is there a woman who is really keen on joining Alter plex, Inc? We have to ask what kind of depreciation he gets subjected to after signing on to work with Alterplex, Inc. Alters represents power and mystery and who wouldn’t want energy from an alternate world? At what expense is the question to ask.

We do have some miltary overwriting gaps regarding what Will has gone through prior to waking up on an alternate alter. After all these missing pieces are covered, it is coming to our realisation that this film doesn’t have much action with the exception of the flashbacks. To focus on what we now understand, Abigail (Berenice Marlohe) plays the role of an Alterplex employee. She shows little personality and warmth whilst hiding many things with little information given.

Will has what he believes is an alternate earth, wakes up to find himself on an binary world. Massive Alterplex Drones assault him straight away as friendly coworker Michael (Tygo Gernardt) liberator, turns into an anti-alterplex freedom fighter. Will, with no means aside from the captivating black box, is hyper-technologized and slavishly pursued by everyone. Moreover, has to go back to the core Alterplex structure. During the journey he has to avoid lethal flying robots that were previously mentioned, as well as skyscrapers that look like giant airplanes and freighters and other vessels that are carelessly dropping out of the clouds.

You don’t have to be a genius to see that Will is helping some very bad people. But I guess that’s too bad that Will is not that intelligent. His attempts to understand how such a betrayal could happen to him is downright comical. And it also isn’t very revealing of the world we live in. Will’s self serving attitude where he puts the welfare of his family over and above the rest does not portray him in a good light. The point is, though, this story is about realizing how there are people who are able to get away with doing the wrong things under the guise of having good intentions by creating problems that aren’t theirs in the first place, and assuming that they are being altruistic.

Will does eventually realize that as a step toward making things right, he has to let go of something that is important to him. The bit about him learning self sacrifice is redeemable, but his journey there isn’t very interesting. He is shot at quite a bit. He also runs into some rebels whom he assumes are evil. He deals with family problems. But at no moment does Will let us know who he is apart from a very strong desire to move from plot point A to plot point B. For example he does not tell us how’s and whys of his expository dialogues. Pez dispensers and candies come to mind.

A large part of “Kill Switch” may seem to be a new approach to story telling.

I am not the most cynical of observers, but were I so inclined, I would dub this film a calling card film – an awkward attempt at launching a film career resting solely on the crutches of shoddy special effects and low-budget creativity. Unfortunately, “Kill Switch” is usually more like a series of experiences that would be far more enjoyable if you were guiding Will through a video game. In fact, one is likely to enjoy that scenario as it offers a form of free choice and allows for the fantasy of exploring a new world at one’s pace. “Kill Switch” differs as it is pigeonholed to the limits of the tale which Kin dinger, Noshing, and their associates decided to tell. I have nothing against Pez dispensers that people collect. I just can’t see them being the next wave of cinema enjoyment.
