Travis is telling me how he and a smaller crew worked on his current film project ‘Depth Perception’. ‘Depth Perception’ is a very charming tribute to snowboarding in its life-affirming form and I am now sitting in a coffee shop in a London hotel room with him.
Turns out that much of the free-flowing approach that characterizes Depth Perceptions riding was not limited to the snowboarding itself. The film’s unique vibe as well as the brisk, initial inspiration for the entire project stemmed from how everything came together quite by accident.
This one came about almost by chance. Travis and Bryan Fox, along with Austen Sweeten and Robin Van Gyn, wanted to shoot a short-format art film in Galena, British Columbia which almost drove this film into a case of ‘the frosting phase’, while his previous project called ‘The Fourth Phase’ drove people into deep brain melting from all the logistical juggling higher military planners would lose sleep over.
I was certain that no one employed this strategy anymore, but just like that, we finished editing on the morning of the premiere, says Travis Rice. And yes, we raced against the clock for this one.
That was the plan, nods Travis, but after the first three weeks of riding, we could all feel it mutually, and by ‘this,’ I mean: Man, this feels really good. So, were going to finish hat we set out to do drive back down.
This bending of the project scope, also known as ‘scope creep’, as Travis says, was led by making various artistic sacrifices to turn the snowboard art piece into an actual product.
At first, I had me, a guy named Chip Taylor who edited most of The Fourth Phase, Chris Murphy from Bozeman, and that’s it. That was the team we had, and we did not publicize this. But guess what? It was super efficient.
During the second round, Travis sought support from friends, players like CMH Heli in Galena, and sponsors like the ones in his impressive network. Ty Evans flew to solder the crew, and Melissa Larsen roped in Rice to write the script. Having drone shots added a lot to give Depth Perception its unique finish.
Travis says, “We decided to ignore everything else for the rest of the winter, went back up there, and gave it another shot.” He always wanted to take an off the cuff approach, and whenever he obtained for example that step in conversation always seemed to be adapted into his words first. Despite having a carefully planned life, from receiving one success to, that’s it! All the way up to alti natural, the rest of the world seemed like it was meticulously planned. That’s not the case with regard to Rice. Everything does look organized and well prepared from the outside but all of it has a lot of shooting from the hip.
