The film’s title made me chuckle. A German officer who is hurt found himself on the desert of Arabia, muttering to himself- ‘There is no pain’, in german, trying to yank out a sharps splinter off his thigh. The cover is also quite outlandish. It makes sure to capture the essence of the film. Elements that are present in all Tarantino movies. The movie starts with a biker riding in front of the pyramids, and to top it all off, the credits emerging in an all famous motorcycle font. The film starts with the episode ‘The Bozeman.
In order to set the location of the movie, it is set in Egypt and the opening credits of the film ‘Game of Aces’ serve the only inclination of the movie theme. Shot on a ostensibly low budget, the movie unfortunately feels like a three character play setup, which consists of a vast empty desert, a battered truck, and a crashed plane.
Game of Aces centers around the rescue of a German spy who has crucial information for the American side during the World War American Pie’s Chris Klein plays shadowed Captain Jackson Cove, the american pilot with a grudge. Jackson is prohibited from flying after he has wrecked too many planes. He allies himself with nurse and german speaking civil, Eleanor Morgan (Victoria Summer). In the old truck, the pair travel straight into the Arabian desert, scouting for the German spy, Josef Von Zimmermann (Werner Daehn), who crashed while trying to convey a message already intercepted from the germans.
We can applaud how the movie helps to weave together a complicated story with simple narration. Rather, there is no need for special effects or elegantly designed backgrounds. All that’s required is a good and superb performance. A move like “Game of Aces” is praiseworthy for its polished acting by the three superbly talented lead actors, and is equally criticized for its many rookie mistakes in dialogues, continuity and even chronology.
All the pieces of a puzzle come together to create an appealing narrative, and there is a clear outline of the movie. The pipe buildup, the twist, and the big reveals are done exactly where they are intended. Boldly getting over the set, costume and budget obstacles of a foreign period film is where the movie fails. There is hope to live to the expectation, but the scripted part is inadequate.
While Jackson and Eleanor are driving through a desert in a truck, a plane drags only a few feet above them. The action takes place early in the movie, where the plane has a parachute can which is taken out and it’s location is crossed over the Jackson’s and Eleanor’s heads. John tries to turn off the paras. After some unfounded experiences trying to defuse what they imagine to be a bomb, Eleanor pretends to muffle her ears to block out the noisy death which is inescapable.
Suspending disbelief to think that two supposedly intelligent individuals believe bombs are dropped by parachutes, when it is clearly a refueling operation, is rather difficult. For starters, if Eleanor seeks to survive a bomb explosion, she should cover her ears, not seek shelter.
Damien Lay deserves credit for finding innovative ways to shoot this ambitious period piece on such a low budget, but certainly overlooks in the writing and directing justify his approach.
Lay used an unmarked desert as his set throughout the film, limiting the number of actors to three: the protagonist, the antagonist and the damsel in distress.
“I loved a lot of moments in which Jackson and Eleanor foughtoh and bantered,” Klein added. That’s what makes independent films so different from the blockbuster ones, and makes exploring their world very appealing to him as well. “I have always had a lot of interest in participating in independent movies,” Klein said. ‘They say it is the best way to challenge actors because they have to get it right in a limited time.
Moreover, he said independent films sets lacks large catering tables or big trailers along with fluffy cushions, and the actors don’t have much free time between shoots.
Klein claimed his character served as a tribute to Indy Jones. At first, he was attracted by the adventure elements of this picture. Klein has always loved these kinds of movies from a young age. He once said if it hadn’t been for “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,” he wouldn’t have gone after acting.
In contrast, Summer was at first worried about the German dialogues, but then she was enthralled by the California desert. “The sunsets were so magical, so peaceful and so expansive,” she said.
In spite of Summer’s fears, her German appears self-assured to the non-German speakers who haven’t been trained.
“Game of Aces” actually has plenty in store for those filmmakers who like to dissect movies. The director’s choices teach a lot, from those that worked, for instance, the stage play modest look, and from those that did not work, like the complete lack of set detail that would indicate the location was Egypt.
