It is one thing to mix a ‘direct-to-video’ version of The Thing (1982), and, oh, well this well, happens when your name is also John this requires a set of stones that outsize your everyday shrinkage, a classical colliery band. Fortunately, John Carl Buechler managed to almost succeed. Despite the fact that DEEP FREEZE is not much more than lukewarm (heh), Buechler manages to unearth some elements of sizzling provocation within the outlook of a fantasy.

Among the top contenders is the photography work on the film. Once again, there is a parallel towards the elegant artwork of Buechler’s And Callaway, Thomas D. (Deep Freeze 1988): “ The Shining (1980), broomstick, Night of the Scarecrow (1995), collection of Charles Band and David DeCoteau movies, and supporting unit on Buechler’s Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988) and Ghoulies Go to College (1990). They didn’t just brighten Deep Freeze, they coated it with Schindler’s pink. Like And Callaway, they are nonchalant about their atrocities.

So, instead, this is how it is. It can instead be argued that they were dipped in a nauseating faint light that is suggestive of the halogen tube lights which are found in the breakout areas, bunks, and corridors in the South Pole lab. This is where the narrative of geologists waging war with a trilobite (which is a type of giant prehistoric woodlouse) unfolds. This is somewhat of a snow-bound prison where days and nights are indistinguishable, and time grinds to a halt. [1] Such elements add to what is his effective sense of banality of the self-imposed prison. His is the deliberate pace of the lens, which, I am sure, would be a patience tester for those seeking thrill-a-minute schlock. He is relentless regarding the sense of misery, the boredom, and the longing which accompanies him. The eye is perpetually waiting through every minutia, angles are lessened, and the camera focus is on a single place for a longer duration than is required to suffocate, accentuating the feeling of the solitary confinement that has already taken place. And enhance the inescapable sensation that a gaze is fixed on us, on the however. As Büechler is alter clairoyant makes commenting very vivid They assume.

Although the trilobite effects painfully bring to mind the joke shop rubbery style “Buechler’s Magical Media Industries” is noted for, they are truely fascinating during the climactic action in Deep Freeze where everything goes haywire tears and the action climbs above a level where POV and handicap puppet shots are possible. It also bears noting that the hand puppet I have described as a ribbed grey baseball mitt is still one of the most distinguishable features of the movie. Deep Freeze truly and beautifully excels at shock humor especially teetering on the edge of almost disgust to borderline terrifying. I would consider it alongside the mouth terror sequence in Jack Shoulders The Hidden (1987) and Gary Jones’ Spiders (2000).

Deep Freeze appears to be a blend of characters that are known for their work in Electra Glide in Blue (1973) (Robert Boris), Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996) (Dennis A. Pratt), and Voodoo Academy (1999) (Matthew Jason Walsh). The mixture of tone is not fully finished but it does stand as quite an interesting blend. Deep Freeze appears to be character driven at the core rather than plot driven.

It goes without saying that they belong to a comic book family, and most of the juvenile members of the cast look a little too handsome and attractive for their roles to feel authentic as real fossil lovers. However, they are all dramatically fleshed out enough to evoke empathy in the audience – particularly when Götz Otto’s pill-popping Schneider starts becoming a threat on par with the trilobite, and becomes just as dangerous as the real dinosaur.

Deep Freeze is the result of the joint production of German companies Buechler and Regent Entertainment, A.C.H. GmbH & Medien Capital Treuhand, which explains the casting of German stars Otto and Alexandra Kamp. It was released in the UK on DVD by Third Millennium on June 10, 20202, along with other fan favorites. And just over a year later, on July 22, 2003, it was released in the United States on disc through Roger Corman’s New Horizons. In the United States, the title was changed to ‘Ice Crawlers’.
