One could easily envision the adrenaline-fueled mentality that direct-to-video action movie lovers experienced some years back when they stumbled upon Lorenzo Lamas and Matthias Hues face-to-face on the cover of 1993’s Bounty Tracker at their local Blockbuster Video.
Worst Vacation Ever: In the film, Lorenzo Lamas takes on the role of Johnathan Damone, Boston’s best bounty hunter. He is on his big break so, in the first scene of the movie, when John has just picked up a significant bounty, he decides to take a breather. He books a flight towards the west to spend some time with his California based sibling Paul in Los Angeles. To his surprise, Paul’s house is today’s catch as it’s being protected by the LAPD. Paul Damone has a vital role to play as a witness against the conman Luis Sarazin, a powerful businessman. After some time, Paul’s business partner implicating him with the crime of money laundering through a corporation that was only a facade forced Paul to go on a serious reporting spree which ultimately landed him in the witness protection program.
Following his close brush with death while fending off a pack of assassins clad with the intent of destroying any evidence related to the money laundering scheme, Sarazin hired them. Paul enjoys, or rather endures, round the clock protection by policemen until Sarazin’s trial. But not too long after, the same group of assassins returns to haunt Paul, this time at his place. They kill Paul, his wife, and the policemen protecting Paul. Well, John lives and this is the one reasoning as to why this movie is not extremely short.
Karate Cowboy: After the massacre at his brother’s house, John has a quick interaction with the head detective of Sarazin’s case, Ralston (Whip Hubley of Top Gun fame). Ralston makes it clear that the police are after a man named Erik Gauss (Matthias Hues), who they believe is responsible for your brother’s death, along with a number of other unsolved murders. So far, they have been unable to arrest Gauss. John suggest that he could help, because hunting people down and bringing them to justice was his forte. But Ralston quickly covers that base: he does not want John going all karate cowboy in Los Angeles, which gives his his opportunity. And so, John proceeds to go all karate cowboy in Los Angeles. Going to the local tattoo parlor to inquire about the tattoo he saw the assassins sporting, he tracks down one of Gauss’ old colleagues: Alberto Manuel (Judd Omen of Red Dawn fame), who tells John about the dojo that Gauss trained at.
The report mentions that this activity enables John to pay a visit to the dojo, where he literally fights the whole class before going up against the sensei himself. John’s antics have reached Gauss and he orders Jewels to deal with the bothersome John Damone issue once and for all. Before John can settle down in his hotel, Jewels manages to find out which hotel he is staying at and this consequently leads to an entertaining yet brief exchange of fire within the room.
Rampage: As Jewels fails to eliminate gauss Damone, all hell breaks loose. Gauss has a “old friend,” or at least used to man named Alberto Manuel, to stop him from speaking to John. Gauss then proceeds to murder him by stabbing him multiple times. Gauss and his team of murderers then go to the second witness of the sarazin case. It is an elaborate massacre scene and Gauss is demolishing evidence and witnesses as per usual. It seems like the villains will of the story win when all of a sudden John Damone gets a little help from the strangest of allies. Some teenagers that Alberto Manual was trying to help out, like Tony, Tiny, and a third unnamed teenager try to help avenge the death of their beloved mentor at the hands of damone. But in order to successfully retrieve vengeance, they aid John Damone and make sure the good side prevails. This was the most unexpected turn of events, and while it was a little ridiculous how concrete teenagers could stand up against highly trained assassins, still, the plot twist that there will be a final fight between John Damone and Erik Gauss was worth it.
