Armageddon Tales is an anthology – a feature length film divided into multiple stories. In this instance, all the plots are short films made by three different directors from different parts of the world, all focusing on the time After the Apocalypse. The film is connected with a scenario that is poorly outlined such as the title cards that come at the beginning which claim to set the world in an era following a pandemic, although pandemic is just buzzword of the moment and features no further than that.
The episodes bear no names and instead are simply arranged according to the year and the country in which they are set. The first of these comes from German commercials director Kaleb Lechowski. I was enchanted by the world that Lechowski builds with amazing imagery behind the post apocalyptic landscapes of David Masterson, of tunnels, ships that have been abandoned in the deserts and so forth. The episode is visually stunning.
The tension-orchestrating dispute is between a more unwieldy survivalist Dav od Masterson and his less experienced counterpart Seumas F. Sargent. While at the ending scene, Lechowski offers a fierce glimpse of hooded figures attacking strangers, begs the question on who or what they are. This scene left me wanting more, nonetheless, it was one of the better episodes.
Starring in the second episode is Canadian director Paul Plett. It features both a strong start and end as the Ranger (Corey Rademaker) is accompanied by a girl (Meredith Rose) through a desolate wasteland. While I felt as if the director did an average job, the episode offered little to no satisfaction. At the same time, it raises the question as to whether the ‘bogies’ are infected humans or fully developed zombies.
The third section is by Jonah Schwartz, an American Director. This is the poorest of all, as there can be a summary of no more than two girls (Manni L. Perez and Jenna Sanchez) discussing with Jeremy Dash if he has a right to use his fusion generator to power his house, or whether it would be better to use it for their community. And that is about everything there is to the episode.
