With the gushing positive announement that “A Star is Born” performed superbly at the box office, it’s easy to look back at one of many scenes early into the movie that is able to convey word for word the overall theme of the picture and why it hooks viewers from start to finish. A star at his peak, Cooper’s Jackson Maine, a former alt country singer with a heavier guitar slant, literally meets Gaga’s Ally at a drag bar where he is heavily drinking and she is performing an astonishing rendition of “La Vie En Rose.” She meanders disdainfully down the bar, and he is shocked by her stunning voice, and her skill which drives him deeper into the alcohol. Her seduction does not end with the vocals and melodrama, else why would he upstairs where the clubitos sing semi-dressed. Later on, she waits with Maine to drink, and when he strums and sings a tune of his own as an appetizer, she prepares to leave with him. The culmination of her love for drama dose not end there. What she is bound to love even more is her viewing him as he emits and he serving her a bar of sight matching the plethora of emotions. His finger was lifting me up at the time I was intending to burst into tears of joy. Together, these two must have realized how in love with each other’s artistry trembling inside each one slowly wished to pursue the dream.
This romance had several retellings, some of which are “lesser” romances than this one, but Cooper and Gaga were able to put a fresh spin on it and I must say, this story is unlike any other romance Cooper and Gaga made sure to tell. It’s in their eyes.
Over the course of that night, Jackson realizes what precisely it is that enables Ally to capture the audience’s attention. She sings a few parts from a song she wrote, which would eventually become a major hit for the both of them. In ‘A Star is Born,’ Jackson tells the audience his wife, Ally, is the greatest singer in the world, and it’s this part of the film where the astonishing events unfold. The two shares an effortless chemistry that leaves the audience begging for more, and for that, I cannot hide my delight in revealing I’m a sucker for these feel-good stories. The true scaled version of pre-Gaga has an idea of how a person can level up from a ‘waitress’ to the epitome of ‘Superstar’, and she perfectly portrays the mix of worry and confidence one has to possess to make things work. It’s only natural for Ally to be anxious about writing songs or just about stepping out on the stage, but there is something within her that knows that she can definitely shred it down. She’s no ordinary timid woman who wants to blossom because of a supportive dude. She’s a powerful woman who Jackson gives the motivation to set free.
Absolutely, every rendition of “A Star is Born” has a very similar “one comet rises while another crashes” storyline. In one of the opening scenes, he is heavily drinking and relying on pills to cope. He began self-destructing more and more while witnessing his partner gain almost unimaginable fame through a style of pop music that he found to be incredibly superficial. Restless is the word that best describes the man depicted in this film, and this is where Cooper shines the most. A friend played by Dave Chappelle tries to offer the advice that every man needs to eventually settle down and stay in a port instead of pulling anchor and moving on again, but Jackson can’t stay still. He is one of those addicts that will do the most mundane thing and justify it as self-destruction. His self-destructive tendencies are on par with his talents, and yet Cooper manages to skirt around the worst parts of the “alcoholism movie” stereotype. It’s an excellent performance, one that balances Gaga’s in fascinating ways.
With her transitioning into popstar status, and him sticking to his whiskey drinking persona, it is easy to picture them drifting apart, however the performers manage to convince audiences that these people care about and depend on each other. Sometimes the very same need that motivates us can in the long run, lead to our downfall.
In my opinion, “A Star is Born” loses some focus during the second half when Ally is a well known celebrity. A few of the scenes focusing on her rise to fame do not seem to fit, particularly when she appears on what is meant to be a comical “SNL” and sings, because it almost appears to mock what Ally (and even Gaga herself in real life) does. It appears that the film leans too much towards accepting Jackson’s notion that pop music has no value. Sometimes it does. And the love triangle that is created between Ally, Jackson and Ally’s manager is the most predictable and poorly developed part of the movie. Fortunately, Cooper the director does manage to get back on track towards the end of the film, and brings his directorial debut to the heartbreaking finish that those who have not watched the originals would expect it to have, but still appreciate.
While some classic pessimists might be tempted to drown “A Star Is Born,” there is simply too much that has been done perfectly here. It’s a musical even annoyed people can enjoy. As with most actors-turned-directors, Cooper is great with his cast, eliciting incredible performances from Gaga, Sam Elliot, Andrew Dice Clay, and others. And the film features heart-stirring songs which anchor it. A lot of ticket buyers go to the movies for the characters within the film, the people they know and care about. “A Star is Born” provides two of the most outstanding characters of the year. It’s a film centered around how songs can impact listeners f\or the better. And for those who wish to believe, it will be a treasured masterpiece.
