Her ‘Stem‘, Ciccerus, transformed Goody into a vampire in the 1800s. She now resides in modern New York with Stacy, a newly transformed vampire, and they sustain themselves on rat blood while socializing with mortals, referred to as ‘day players’. When Stacy encounters a man she actually cares about, both characters discover that there is a distinct possibility she could revert to being mortal if Ciccerus passes away.
Amy Heckerling, director of Clueless, made the film Vamps in 2011, a horror comedy where Alicia Silverstone, who also appeared in Senior Year, plays the role of Goody. Krysten Ritter plays Stacy, and we have Sigourney Weaver as Ciccerus. She appeared in Gorillas in the Mist, Alien, and Ghostbusters, and if you haven’t seen any of these you are wasting your time with Vamps.
Being a fan of Krysten Ritter and Sigourney Weaver, I was a little surprised and disappointed by the fact that this movie, with such an astounding cast, could be as unfunny as it was. Having known the director’s previous works include Look Who’s Talking, National Lampoon’s European Vacation, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, I could have better prepared myself for this. It’s simply not the sort of humor I enjoy, but it definitely seems like it would appeal to plenty of people (or at least it did back in the 80s). Guess that’s the consequence of blindly choosing films to watch.
Now, I get that there’s a fine line between fantasy and reality, especially when dealing with a vampire rom-com, but I would still like to raise an issue here. In one particular scene, Goody’s character puts forth the possibility of familiarizing the audience with a surprise twist by revealing that her character is actually far older than she appears. To which Goody proceeds to answer, “Who names their child Goody anymore?” Well, a ‘no one’ answer suffices because that has never been the case. Here, the writer makes the same blunder as the writers of Wednesday in assuming that “Goody” was indeed a name, when in all honesty, it was a title which stood for “good wife”.
Sigourney Weaver has delivered some iconic lines while performing in Vamps that are sure to bring a smile to your face. She does indeed seem to be enjoying herself. It would be interesting if they made a film solely about her character, who is an ancient vampire obsessed with a young Spanish pop star. She could be pursued by Wallace Shawn throughout Europe, who, much like Weaver, is underutilized in this film.
