Parting from the linear chronology of events ,I would like to make an observation about when the film is set. Movies similar or from the same genre as this seem to have a lot more popularity than this movie intended. The Lord Protector-The Riddle of The Chosen was released during an era in which Conan The Barbarian was getting all the attention at the box office, claiming the title of most popular film. Because of this, it is easy to group all of the other films released in this time frame, which includes The Lord Protector, into these time frame, which Premises And performs are absurdingly at the same time in the 2000 timeframe.
The aforementioned movies have made it exceedingly easy for new generation viewers to categorize movies as immature. The soap opera style drama and coverage of the scenes where accompanied by the rest of which were quite incredibly amusing, placed this movie somewhere in between ‘trashy Xena’ and ‘dull forked bladed Hercules’ which is sad to say the least. With so much liberty blamed on the actor as well, it is easy to realize why the movie is so poorly rated. It is almost as if The Lord Protector was filmed with the intention of making the viewers laugh. The reality is, The Lord Protector is a softcore movie which fails in the execution of the actions tried.
The film contains an action scene that had me on the verge of believing what I was observing. The beginning of the movie makes you feel like you are actually watching a sequel of a movie that you have not had the chance to see. Furthermore, the background for the current release is far sicker than the original cover. The Lord Protector is not free of loopholes, for the main actor of the movie always lacks credibility. To broaden my knowledge, I searched it up and only managed to raise more eyebrows. The cave dwellers happen to be one of my most loved episodes of MST3K. The flashback is reminiscent of the jawdropping first scene.
In “The Lord Protector,” we see Patrick Cassidy playing the unparalleled hero tasked with defeating evil within the world. The voice of Charlton Heston serves as a powerful prologue while our protagonist sets off on his quest to solve the Riddle of the Chosen. His pursuit leads him on ventures across the realm as he forms bonds and defeats foes. And in his pursuit of evil, he is joined by Malthon and Lady Diamond who help him get closer to the heart of evil.
On this note, I feel that anyone participating in Dungeons & Dragons or taking part in the renaissance festival would appreciate this movie, considering the loose narrative of the film. In all honesty, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still manages to deliver some decent fight scenes while evoking a nostalgic feeling that harkens back to classic TV. Admittedly, I don’t know how most of the cast members look like but it seems like most of them had a career in film and it was all professionally done. But the cherry on top of the tomato is that his character gets introduced so late into the movie that he ends up being the public narrator, making the casting decision entirely moot. Wouldn’t you call that classic bait and switch?
Let’s be real, there are many things wrong with this movie. That said, the special effects are incredibly subpar. It tries really hard, but the CGI is horrendous to the point where you can’t tell if it’s from 2005 or 1996. Luckily, the shooting locations were stunning. It’s hard to believe they had a low budget when all the fantasy settings were done so well. I’m not sure if there’s old building somewhere or an old film set was used, but they did brilliantly, so it’s nice to know somewhere in the world there’s a place that isn’t too ugly. I’m positive there are worse looking films on SyFy, and if I was told that this was a pilot of a show, I wouldn’t have been surprised since it looks so much like it. Although the footage was shot with a film camera, it seemed like a considerable amount of money was spent, so it is a little surprising.
I’m such a huge fan of live music, especially for a genre called ‘Dungeon Synth’ To my pleasant surprise, I had a lot of fun listening to some of the music that came from this film. The epic synthesizer beats are extremely cheesy, and for that reason, are immediately associated with the 80’s and would fit well within a multitude of 80’s movies. Admittedly, singing along to these tunes, no matter how ridiculous they are, provides a certain level of charm to the film.
The Lord Protector The Riddle of the Chosen is one of those films in which the acting, special effects, and overall direction seems incredibly poor and cringe, yet is so appealing on so many levels. For example, I found the acting and special effects quite unsatisfactory, and it felt like I was watching a D&D game, which bothered me. However, this still comes off as a very ‘charming’ movie. Unlike so bad it’s good, this hilarious movie’s charm is combined with an entertaining plot. I’ll be honest I’m not recommending it, but if old UPN action shows are your thing, this is sure to appeal to you. If shallow one liners mixed with brilliant goody synth tunes are your forte, prepared to be blown away!
