Black gaund is a 1972 movie which is filled with social criticism of the time. Between fist fights and gun battles and everything in between, characters seem to delve into topics such as segregation, class and race as well. The main character, rummaged by to as Gunn is a club owner in the African American world, is played by the talented Jim Brown. Gunn is dragged into a world of violence and power plays when his brother who heads a militant organization gets into trouble with the mob after he unleased one of their betting establishments.

Here, the general story arc has been presented time and again within Hollywood Circles. An individual with a firm grasp of self-sufficiency gets embroiled in someone else’s issues due a friend or relative. Now, this individual is supposed to disassemble the entire structure of the world in order to keep the promise they gave to themselves. These stories type focus on the principal character primary. In this example, I found Gunn very amiable. Starting with the first sequence, he appears smart, confident, collected, and brave. For me, all are what I would consider admirable qualities. That is why this film even holds together at all because of Jim Brown’s Performance. Other than that, all you have is a sore of radicals and criminals threatening and shooting at one another. Gunn degreases every single aspect of the violence and havoc.

For me, Jim Brown’s performance was top-notch but the other actors were not horrible either. It is simply, there were few templates to build off. It was like the cast gently came in and out with no clarity of purpose.

Actually, it seems to be the main issue of the movie. There is no coherent path towards which characters can develop. Gunn and his collaborators seem to only act with fervor, rage and venom. There are no real arcs nor growth in the people involved. Sure, it makes for a lot of activity, disputes, and physical altercations but one is left to feel rather apathetic towards them. The ending, even though it is action packed, is a classic example of this. It didn’t appear to actually conclude anything. Neither does Gunn, well, any of the other characters it seems, undergo any type of evolution. Sure, he had his world turned upside down, but the question is, does he feel different? I have my doubts. So, it seems, there is absolutely no nuance in the whole film other than a group of uncontrolled hotheaded individuals clashing together in the midst of sociocultural and economic conflicts.

If you are a fan of watching movies with a theme of revenge accompanied by a one-man army setting out to inflict pain and take down as many enemies as possible, you will enjoy this. Gunn ends up being the charming protagonist of the story. You support him, which makes it easier for him to get your respect and look at him. It is because of this calm and collected demeanour that I wish there was a bit more expectation placed on him.

For one reason or another, he seems mesmerized by the mindless violence of his surroundings, like a spectator watching a bar room fight. The character is still enjoyable to watch, although he is more like a puzzle that seems like he was assembled in haste.
