This is not at all in the spirit of Roger Corman’s creature features or the equally “so bad, they’re good” features from Asylum or SyFy. Contrary to the title Killer Bees, the film focuses far too much on the romance between the sheriff, his wife, and Riley the bee specialist, which really misses the point of the film. The romance goes nowhere because of the fact Riley has an M.S. So great job scriptwriters.
C Thomas Howell, aka “Jack’s Father” from his movies The Amazing Spider-Man and The Day The Earth Stopped, is now the small-town Sheriff of Lyndon Harris in the state of Washington. Howell played one of the kids in the movie E.T. He is no longer residing with his wife but is still active in raising their two children. Unfortunately, a subspecies of bee that hasn’t been spotted in that region the killer bee begins to invade the area and starts to kill some people and livestock. While the term ‘killer’ is used with extreme bias, the entire concept does live up to the label – calling it a novel take on the sub-genre of killer “creatures”. The expected attributes of the storyline include a certain phobia that we all share and the rightfully self-dubbed “heroes” who seek answers to the commotion in this case, the sheriff and bee expert. Couple these with the obligatory issues such as an estranged wife, kids not understanding why and the mayor alongside local beekeepers who are in denial about a problem until it’s too late and the plot comes full circle.
In the beginning and midway through the story, we are with Sheriff Harris as he tries to alarm every one of an unfortunate situation that is going to be caused but no one pays any attention to him. The mayor does not want to raise any sort of alarm, and coupled with the fact that it is pollination season, the local beekeepers do not want to lose out on money. But once people start dying, the chaos of it all begins to unwind. Bees attacking the people is what sends things spiralling out of control and shifts the focus to the creature’s feature aspects. An elderly lady is left alone at her question with only her shotgun and the local population is busy with a potentially disastrous open-air community festival.
When Killer Bees was first released, the storyline was one we all had seen before, but with a twist. They made an effort to portray their story as far away from reality as possible. And on that, they surely were able to achieve their goal. Even with all that has been said, none of the extreme themes such as family tensions were lost. Even a bit distant, a sheriff’s son appears to be engrossed, unlike his peers. Killer Bees is a film like many of its poor exhibitionist-themed siblings, however, its focus is on the family, which in turn makes it intriguing instead of horrendous. Even with broader family focuses, conflict gets selectively integrated through a few characters, such as the mayor.
