My objective of watching no horror movies during January is still going on, however the end is near. It has been excruciating to not watch even a single horror movie this month. The entirety of the month, I have been closely engaged with sleazy sexploitation vintage porn films. Fortunately some of the films I got to review were not of the horror or porn genres.

One of them was the Brett Kelly produced flick Rise of the Black Batwhich which happens to be a combination of other superhero movies. In a way, the film is a mockbuster that MVD sent my way a few months ago. Perhaps the only redeeming quality of this film is that I had no expectations to begin with. And by now, I can say indeed that I did not want to see it. After watching it, I was right to want to avoid it.

The movie portrays district attorney Tony Quinn (Haucke) as he attempts to put to rest a local mobster. The mobster closely tracks him, and one of his goons pours acid into his eyes, blinding him. Believing his career is over, he succumbs to alcoholism until a beautiful young woman persuades him to let her fix his eyes and resume his hunt for the mobster.

He does get new vision and sees best at night. He decides to use this new ability to wage war on the mob while dressed as a bat and armed with pistols. Fighting to restore order in the cities streets.

After seeing ugly bitches with hair on their legs getting used, this was a breath of fresh air. The movie however, was far from entertaining and further from perfect. There was no character development, no depth, and some of the most poorly executed action sequences I have ever watched.

For an indie film, the acting here is fairly acceptable but certainly not anything worth gushing over or winning an accolade. ‘Wanted’ is Jody Haucke’s best role as he keeps the character well, but is completely wrong to portray an intimidating district attorney, and even more so as a convincing vigilante. The rest of the cast is a little of a step up from Haucke and his characters. They are quite credible and quite persuasive.

The story for this film is literally a smash up of the comic book characters ‘Daredevil’ and ‘Batman’ which may sound wonderful on paper but it did not do so well on film. Both of these characters are very well known and so is their origin so a cheap attempt to combine both of these and put them into one movie feels entertaining.

Finally, the film has some computer generated images of on screen gunshot kills, but they look horrible. The kills are beyond belief and not very fun. The movie has a lot of CG used for the environment and building enhancements which resulted in an amateurish movie. In a nutshell, Rise Of The Black Bat is a no brainer with no comical relief that tries really hard to succeed but really has no hope of getting there. You may as well pass this one.
