There is truly no point in watching All About Christmas Eve when there are literally hundreds of Hallmark or Lifetime Christmas movies but there is one – Nicky Endres and Ralph Cole Jr. play minor sprinkling roles that are first drag queens, perhaps a first. (Endres identifies as Non-binary Transfem Queer). They play the title character’s sassy bar friends but, hey, better to have them in than not. Their presence is about the only notable thing in this movie other than the fact that it is indeed, nothing like All About Eve but is more similar to Sliding Doors.
Haylie Duff’s character, Eve, is an elite party planner who specializes in event management that can seamlessly blend a Christmas theme with a Bar Mitzvah. Her talent has not gone unnoticed as her boss, Elizabeth (Connie Sellecca), feels that her skills can be utilized to open and run their next office in Los Angeles. However, prior to completing her relocation, she is required to handle one final task, an important contract with Gobble. Although there are some winter festivities occurring in Beverly Hills for some of their investors, Aidan (Chris Carmack), her superior, has handpicked Eve for her skills on this project. Unfortunately, all employees seem to forget that she has plans to travel to Vermont with her boyfriend Darrin (Stephen Colletti). If she proceeds with the trip, she may be left single, but an inability to do so may cost her the job.
The movie is about choices and how a single moment can change an individual’s life completely. Despite that, some choices seem too trivial for Eve. She could, for instance, get rid of Darren. Why keep a guy who spends all his time sitting on her appartment couch? And, whatever it is that he does all day could hardly qualify as a ‘job’. Besides, she’s probably footing the bill for all the groceries. She could easily book a cab and set an alarm for the next morning. The only reason she could almost miss her flight or totally miss it is that she was too late getting started. There are tragic consequences hooked to these two scenarios. With that in mind, let’s move forward, because the possibilities are endless.
In one scenario, she is the star of the show, sitting at in the first class section while drinking champagne and is ready to shine in her career. In another case, she is snoozing on an extendable bed in her parents’ living room, eavesdropping on her parents discussing the raunchy activities they will indulge during their cruise to Bermuda. But the good choices are not always beneficial, and sometimes routes that seem wrong can fix themselves. Although you do not need to see this movie to understand that. Duff plays a sorrowful role of Eve in this movie as she somehow always gets into trouble that has no correlation to being a well-functioning human and the story itself. And it is a relief to know that the movie is short.
