Although the title of Zombie Beach might make it seem simple, there is far more than what meets the eye. The promise of a multilateral approach concerning the title is fulfilled. In the film world, zombies alongside comedies offer the best of both worlds. It is a touchy feely experience for Mukesh Asopa considering he directed, co wrote, produced and acted in the horror comedy. Lastly, he is not alone here as he is accompanied by Carey Lewis, Rajesh Asopa which rounds up the whole family concept. With two of them holding the same family name as the director, the assumption is clear. This is truly a family affair.
Often some characters require transformation for the storyline to transition. Mukesh Asopa plays Roshan who has made his way back to America after a lengthy stay in India. His best mate Justin, his girlfriend Vanessa and best friends Mike are waiting eagerly to welcome him along with celebrating his return. On the contrasting side, Roshan is not as ecstatic and calm. Most importantly, because of his poor sleep. Every night for instance starts with strange scenes where he is left fighting zombies on a mystical beach. However, one-way Roshan checks in on Mike and Justin’s beach photoshoot, his nightmares slowly but surely morph into a gruesome reality.
This is a golden opportunity to look at the one more important character in Zombie Beach: The Holy Man. Portrayed by Kamal Nandi, this character is crucial in weaving together all the elements of the story. However, there is no need for me to go deeper because of the potential for spoilers, however, there are two things to remember about The Holy Man. For starters, of all the characters in the film, he has the most serious demeanor, and he is the one that has the film’s narration at the beginning. Sadly, there is no need to go into great detail because this particular step is an egregious case of exposition dumping. Second, he did a really good job, and certainly made his part the core of the picture.
At first, Asopa appears to be shy like Roshan, but as the zombies start biting, he starts to grow in the character. Gamble and MacDonald are good friends, while Stefanski is really nice. Rick Cordeiro and Lisa Dang, who play zombie-fighting cops, will have the audience rolling in the aisles. They are so much fun to watch, that one loses track of time, especially with their impeccable timing.
The characters are well drawn, even though they occasionally do some silly things (who ignores a warning sign about zombies?). The Holy Man is particularly well developed and has unique reasons for participating. The characters are so well developed that the viewers will empathize with everybody from the Zombie Beach show.
Asopa has managed to pick out angles that optimize the creep factor despite the fact that the lighting makes the low budget evident. The long shots where shambling corpses lurk behind the protagonists are especially packed with tension. The sinewy jaws, blood splattered faces, and good zombie effects speak volumes for themselves.
Imperfect as Zombie Beach may be, it is guaranteed to bring some satisfaction to those looking for some imagination with their undead confections. The pacing of the flick is great, the acting is average, and the zombie effects on screen are definitely the standout. Asopa’s little flick does magic due to the abundant humor making it a fun experience.
