Wynonna Earp debuted on the SYFY in 2016 and although it was low-budget and awkward at times nobody can argue that it was an entertaining show. It merged the legendary robbing and shooting cultures of the Wild West with the realm of fantasy. The show was fun, had genuine talent behind it, and most importantly a devoted fanbase that meant the show would never go away. After the fans put up a struggle and ages flew by, Wynonna Earp had its fourth season which was touted as the last one and we all presumed that’s the end of it.
Until Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. The correct term to describe the situation is actually closure. Earp fans were spoiled with a 90-minute special coming on Tubi an announcement that only proves how devoted these people are to the Earp fans whereby they wish even the comeback of Wynonna would be accessible to every person. Wynonna, welcome home now let’s head towards this review.
The show may be done and it has been some time since it last aired, but being on a new channel such as Vengeance feels fresh. Why not Melanie Scrofano reverts into the role of Wynonna Earp flawlessly and it feels ideal. The romance and connection both Scrofano and Tim Rozon portraying Doc Holliday still exists in this present season. It feels fulfilling when one sees Rozon appear as the quickest shooter in the West, he is just too good for the role.
However, Vengeance did not hold itself back either, in terms of risk-taking. The first scene was particularly violent and gruesome for a start, which made the audience realize early on that there was no fun intended in this film. Now, I will say a few things that do include a few spoilers because I feel the need to compare it to another show that returned after a hiatus of several years, only to ruin its predecessors and fans’ expectations.
Major Spoilers:
Veronica Mars was yet another show where there was a fandom in place before the show got canceled. And when Veronica Mars returned for a miniseason back in 2019 on Hulu, people were thrilled. Until the main character became almost unbearable and Logan was killed off in such a careless way which showed that the writers had killed a character fans grew to know and love.
Now, Wynonna Earp could have finished on season four and everyone would be happy. And sure, there were some bumps in the road for Wynonna and Doc in Vengeance but in the end, it worked and felt right for a couple who have been through so much and have been together for so long. It was done in a mature way and with love as opposed to the way writers treated Veronica and Logan in Veronica Mars.
In that context, it was disheartening, so to speak, to kill off Doc Holliday. How sad is that? Well, as a matter of fact it was stunning. Doc was not blown away, he died in the presence of the woman he adored. It was highly emotional and brutal and Melanie and Tim most certainly made the audience shed tears with their performance. Now, let me transition to the third person, regarding Rozon, there is an interview with Rozon (Buzzfeed) in which Rozon testified to the fact that it is a Sci-Fi show and everything can happen. Perhaps it is not a good idea to expect any breakthroughs but considering everything, again it was bittersweet and quite carefully considered for the character.
It’s Good to Be an Earper So, let’s loop back around. Everyone else was great as well. It was nice to see Katherine Barrell again as Nicole Haught and Dominique Provost-Chalkley as Waverly Earp. Destiel, forget it. WayHaught is what a fandom should be built around. When Waverly and Nicole wrapped around Wynonna to greet her on her return, it felt like saying hi to the audience. Hi, everyone, this is for you. Some are even happy to see showrunners writers and actors who appreciate their fans and the work they do you can sense it throughout the entire special. In the end, Wynonna Earp’s Vengeance made me feel like I was watching yet another story arc in Wynonna Earp. It was tragic, supernatural, exciting, and heartfelt all at once, and most importantly it reminded each of us that this was a fantastic show. What was ever the deal with ending it? Regardless, Earpers, if you are out there and are still craving Earpy goodness, look no further because Vengeance is here. It does not disappoint and best of all, does not tarnish the original which so many reboots do these days.
