After almost two years, the UK is finally getting Harvey Lowry’s 2017 horror movie ‘Asomatous’ (now named Underworld) which I had no idea about.
It solves the classical problem of over complicating the plot. Trying to encompass everything at once. Off the top of my head, there does appear to be excessive use of the concept of ghosts. Let’s not forget, the first six minutes already features disembodied voice and two haunting figures.
After his wife dies in a house fire, Alex Gibbs (Jack Campbell), a widowed father, relocates with his kids Sophie (Isabella Kai) and Rachel (Whitney Rose Pynn) to a provence house. In an interesting casting choice, Whitney is 31, yet she plays the role of Rachel who is half her age.
The reason why Eric picked this house is because it is supposedly haunted. He thinks that if he gathers enough evidence to prove that the haunted house is a hoax, it would make for a great book. He has also spent time in a psychiatric unit after his wife passed away, so how many of you think that can lead to dangerous outcomes?
Before long, the kids’ mother’s belongings are discovered scattered about in the attic with neither kid accepting blame for it, To top it off, the technician from the telecommunications company who came to set everything up is met with a ghostly apparition and, just like in ‘The Amityville Horror’ a voice instructs him, “Get Out!” Like a priest in.
The rest of the pieces are filled in by the neighbor, Hannah (Catherine Kresge), who informs him that many years ago a man murdered his family in that house, and even back then, there were many disturbances reported in the neighborhood.
Sophie seems to have an imaginary friend, who most definitely falls under the spooky category. Next, the two young girls play scrabble and the words on the board are ‘fire’, ‘burning’, and ‘death.’ That is a triple word score!
Understanding what is happening here partly lies in the title itself; that is defined as energy which does not possess a body (‘Without a Body’). So, it will not surprise you that 2012’s Sinister is among the many movies that have been raided for content.
‘Without a Body’ is often rather silly, rather too seriously romantic, with a soundtrack that overwhelms deafeningly unrestrained and is decidedly too frantic, but an undemanding 90 minutes of your time is plenty, and there is joy in playing ‘Haunted House Bingo’ citing all the references in the movie (although they missed the chance for a bouncing ball).
