Weather Wars isn’t considered a timeless masterpiece of cinematography, but it features Stacy Keach as an unhinged climate scientist with adversaries. That’s something. I mean, Keach as a deranged cult leader who utilizes super-advanced technology to kill his disbelievers makes for an entertaining flick. Weather Wars Keach sounds menacing, but even if the rest of the movie can’t live up to that, I still think it’s enjoyable. The structure is, of course, absurd, but we understand the crux of the tale is intended to show brutal, freak weather storms cause destruction and dismantle everything in sight, so damage is indeed done. There’s an element regarding two brothers trying to team up to deal with their father’s unnatural ability to control the weather, but that sounds a lot cooler than it actually is. The actual focus is on the mayhem that the weather unleashes, which the film does deliver on, thanks to some cheap laugh inducing CGI. But again, you know what you’re in for a movie like Weather Wars so yes, the visual effects are cliched, but it somehow makes it even better.

Without a doubt, the movie’s storm scenes are extremely visual and interesting, although I wish these scenes encompassed less of the separated family element and more of the disaster element. Although these aspects of the film may not be one hundred percent accurate, for all the fans who enjoy SyFy Channel style disaster movies, is still worth watching – if not for anything else than for Keach’s performance.

While disaster scenes will attract viewers, Stacy Keach steals the show in Weather Wars. In many instances, his lunatic scientist makes the movie worthwhile. When the storms settle, there’s not a lot of enjoyment to soak up, so varied, over-the-top performance really helps mend the flow of the movie. As he channels an unrestrained Ira, Keach makes no attempt to hold back. With the dedication to the role, he transforms himself into a deranged character set on resolving grudges through the weather, which is a delight to watch. He isn’t given much depth of character to work with, but he nails the vengeful genius part well while embracing the movie’s stupendous b movie tone with glee. He has too little time, especially since the estranged son part is such a bore. Luckily, Keach’s wacky performance along with the weather disasters help elevate the movie. The cast also includes Jason London, Erin Cahill, Lance E. Nichols, and Miles Doleac.

The Disc As the name suggests, Mill Creek Entertainment’s Apocalypse 4 in 1 Collection does include a movie called Weather Wars and also contains 3 other similar sci/fi disaster movies. This film is quite alright in this edition, with a clean and reasonably sharp presentation overall. I found the contrast to be accurate and the colors warm and nice. I didn’t have any compression issues and with two movies on each disc, there’s room to breathe here. I would say that in comparison to other DVD visual presentations, this one looks quite solid.
