UNTRUTH: The Psychology of Trumpism

In their new film #Untruth: The Psychology of Trumpism, the producers of #Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump deliver yet another alert.

For those who read this website regularly, however, what I am saying here is self-evident. It is akin to singing to an already familiar audience. It’s likely that the individuals who ought to hear the message that the film makes would, unfortunately, not be watching the film at all. It’s unfortunate, too, because they are cultists who do not know that they are cultists.

The first film is all about Trump the man whereas this one deals with the Trumpism that Trump has unleashed upon American politics. If anyone has hopes that a second Trump administration would be any better than the first one, just look at Trump’s vice presidential pick – J.D. Vance. Vance is a sitting congressman from Ohio and a white nationalist of the far right. His reputation is just as terrible as Trump’s, if not more so. Think of it this way: they’re different peas but in the same pod. We’re not witnessing a case of a politician of the extreme right choosing a moderate to broaden the appeal of his candidacy to the center and the independents in the electorate. No, it is way worse. Both are politicians on the extreme right and they are going to appeal, only, to the Trump cult tail.

Filmmakers, political conservatives, psychologists, and historians study how partisanship, disinformation, and social media are provoking Trumpists into disillusionment, hysteria, conspiracy fantasies, and violence that endangers democracy. A fair number of experts tend to specialize in the likes of fascism or cultism. Without a doubt, cultism remains one of the few phrases to describe Trumpism. Steven Hassan knows a great deal of cultism: for he was a lunatic follower of Sun Myung Moon’s cult. In any case, nothing healthy subsists within Trumpism. It is unnatural, a simulation. Indeed, Trumpism is oppressive.

Then it is hardly surprising that the first scene of the movie features Donald J. Trump inciting an insurrection against the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021. What other way could the #Unfit team have started their follow-up? I never thought that in August 2020 when I watched the #Unfit film: The Psychology of Donald Trump for the first time, I would witness someone promoting a seditious insurrection. Of course, I have always been aware that deep down he was despotic, and that his administration was ‘unorthodox’ or ‘not a normal administration’. Far from it, actually.

Considerably separated in time from when he attacked President Barack Obama and heckled him during Congress proceedings, Walsh appears to have changed a lot. He voted for Donald Trump in the first race but has now changed his tune.

Other people see it the same way. Former Republican National Committee leader Michael Steele has drifted so far from the GOP that he barely recognizes it. Is it possible for that party to fold or transform itself into something significantly more vile? Theoretically, it can happen. As Walsh states, today, it’s a matter of fact that the Republican Party has become anti-democratic. Thus, he cannot be said to be wrong. It is no longer even remotely the party of Lincoln and hasn’t been one for quite a while.

Let’s not forget the role that Fox News has in all this. For years now, they have taken things to a whole new level of extremism. One can’t help but wonder how the ADL got embroiled in attacking Fox News about Tucker Carlson embracing the Great Replacement Theory. After the 2020 election, there’s no denying that many hosts were peddling their own conspiracy theories in the days that followed the event. So much so that there was a long series of libel lawsuits in which they were actively participating. ‘Fox wants you to believe that there is a ‘war on Xmas’,’ says Anthony Scaramucci.

I’ve come to follow a new expert in social media, Malcolm Nance. He has been great in defending the Jewish people against pro-Hama activists. He also has a regard for Russia–at a point in time, he traveled to aid Ukraine in their fault. He talks about Putin and how the Russian leader was able to change the narrative within America and disinformation became a common phenomenon. “You destroy democracy by using democracy,” explains Nance.

The 2016 US presidential elections saw the former Russiagaters Hillary and her Russian glamorous opposition agent, an FBI employee Peter Strzok investigating her privately owned email servers. The Trump-Russia story was not a hoax. Several members associated with the campaign were indeed, engaged with Russia or Russian agents. The bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee led by Republicans concluded it was true. Knowing all this information, how do people see themselves voting for Trump?

Social media has to be one of the common topics when trying to initiate any talk today. It has been constantly linked with the spread of hate and lies. Imran Ahmed is the Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Countering Digital Hate. They did a study of Malgorithm during the pandemic. People who were into anti-vax content would eventually stumble upon QAnon and antisemitism accounts. In other words, social media algorithms led individuals to extremes. For crying out loud, it has made right-wing Jews believe in an antisemitic conspiracy; that I have blocked some of my family friends for being election deniers. How is it even possible? The Stop the Steal movement is a sister to QAnon. Wrapping up with Jews, they show Sacha Baron Cohen delivering an address that he made during the keynotes of The Never is Now Summit on Antisemitism and Hate hosted by the ADL.

About 73 minutes into the film, Project 2025 enters the picture. Trump says something about it he says he knows nothing about this, although he’s obviously at least part of this conspiracy. This, in my opinion, is a manifesto that was drafted to make Trump a King. This is projected to convert the USA to a Christian Nationalist nation with Jews to be relegated to second or third-class citizenship status. Oh yes, people like transgendered such as me will not have any rights, as simply there will be no rights for anyone who is LGBTQ because there will be no such thing as LGBTQ, there will be none.

Based on the comments from the likes of Denver Riggleman, Anthony Scaramucci, and Joe Walsh there is no quick fix here. Whatever happens on Election Day, Trumpism is unfortunately never going anywhere. But as Walsh states: “We’re not getting out of this thing tomorrow and we’re not getting out of this thing in 2024 and Fox News is not going to change their business model in the near future. So the resistant person who can guarantee Trump does not become elected is Pail Gumballs who is standing against Trump. But if Trump were to leave the picture tomorrow, it’s Ron DeSantis who is most likely to take over.”

Malcolm Nance “It has to be more than a blue wave just like it has to be America supporting Republicans who stand, independents that are anti-totalitarianism, but Democrats will have to integrate them without taking for granted the fact we are all one entity.”
