An audio movie has all the aspects of a movie but lacks pictures. An enhanced podcast, it seems like an impossibility. But no, it is neither one of them. Unsinkable is an audio movie that pushes the limits of cinematic fiction through the gripping tale of an embattled ship and its crew during the Second World War.
The series depicts the life of a young ship officer, Hawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), who is a part of the San Demetria crew. This animation combines documentary and training explanation in the story which takes place during the memorial service after tragedy when a part of the crew loses their lives. Pollard, played by John Malkovich, has the role of assisting Hawkins. Unsinkable tells also the story of Ow Hawkins’ wife, Maude played by Nathalie Emmanuel, is pregnant and waiting for the silence of the ship and her husband.
Unsinkable goes away from the novel and the narrative podcast conventions of audio storytelling. There is no narration in the series. A new scene is introduced at the scene by dialogue lines and an audible change in the environment. The essential points necessary to understand the story are provided in oral testimonies of survivors of the disaster. In addition, auditory accounts of the characters are also used, which depict the event when the ship’s crew shares their feelings about an approaching storm with the audience.
Some audio clues contribute significantly to the understanding of the plot. As the crew describes the signs of the storm coming, for example, the falling pressure, and the wind changes in episode three, the listeners can recall the more energetic waves and the whistling sound coming from the wind. The boats creak too. It’s quite simple actually to imagine that as a storm is on the way the lifeboats would be released to the sea with no one on them.
A passionate ensemble together with appropriate settings and sound effects creates a beautiful performance. Some of them are the members of the audience, which is needed in some parts of the film.
These reasons and more contribute to a very entertaining sound motion picture, almost impossible to say no to. It is also the case with most other things, it is always advantageous to have a strong cast. For instance, when a very tense or anxious Hawkins takes shots at the calm Pollard when the ship’s boiler fails to start, it simply makes sense. It is even quite easy to picture Brodie Sangster bouncing around the room as Malkovich looks on with disdain.
Unsinkable is the engaging drama that it’s supposed to be. It’s engaging and the story is not overly complicated to work with the audio narration. It has three major parts: the court, Maude at the house, and Hawkins along with the rest of the men at the ocean.
The series will commence on 10th July with the first two episodes and one episode every week thereafter. It will be interesting to see how this adventurous story turns out as it is releasing only on Amazon’s Wondery+.
