Tyler Perry’s new film “Divorce in the Black”(2024) is ready for watching on Prime Video. Meagan Good stars as Ava while Cory Hardrict plays the role of Dallas. This is quite an engrossing film with deep emotions. This film is a romantic thriller with a clear depiction of emotional turmoil through the lead character.
Synopsis
This movie revolves around the relationship of Ava and Dallas and the extent of damage this relationship has done specifically to Ava. The narrative starts with the funeral organized by Ava’s parents for Dallas’s brother, which was held in their church. After an dramatic opening there was a clash between the two families of Ava and Dallas. This is a tale of how Ava is stuck in an abusive marriage and that was what led the conversation to discuss her divorce with Dallas.
Highs
Meghan Good’s heartfelt portrayal of Ava, who exhibited authentic feelings of grief and regret, is one of the film’s strong points. Her journey as she evolves as a survivor who manages to break free from her abusive husband is fascinating. She does a reversal from a subservient wife who obeys her husband\’s every word to a strong, independent woman who has her own voice.
The other highlight is the film’s plot which mainly revolves around two families before and after marriage, how Ava coped with Dallas’s abuse, and all his violent treatments towards her. One of the film’s messages is that one should never lose themselves in an abusive marriage and it is the abuser who should be the defeated one. It shows what women can do when they are well cared for, in this particular scenario, surrounded by their friends and family.
There was amazing chemistry between Ava and Joseph Lee Anderson’s character, Benji. He is the kind of guy who waits for his girl throughout the movie and is the first one to protect her as he indeed always has. Here, in his tale, the lady is the main and he is the main supporter. This character is important in the context of Ava’s story because it gives a romantic link which her action-packed drama needs.
Another good aspect of the film is the suspenseful part where her husband stalks her and expresses his jealousy, which was actually her husband. It was really the abusive husband who had a great deal of Hardict\’s demeanor pointed out. The intensity of emotion, be it anger or despair was surreal. The film was well executed and had a terrific major twist.
Ava’s bond with her friend Rona (played by Taylor Polidore Williams), was another highlight. Rona was a loyal and supportive friend who was always ready to defend Ava. Rona and Ava would defy all odds and remain friends no matter the circumstances. She made Ava understand that no matter how dark the times are, there’s always hope.
Lows
Given how profound it was considered, it seems that there weren’t many negative points to this movie. The weak point of this movie, however, was Dallas’ mom, who was as abusive as her son. She was aggressive and violent throughout the entire movie. It showed how dysfunctional the whole family was and why they couldn’t see Ava’s side of the story even after everything that Dallas did.
Another low point was the lack of context on how and why did Dallas become aggressive and such an angry child. Knowing this would help round out the plot further and would engage the viewers. At various different points in the movie starting from the middle, his character was portrayed as having a mental illness, however, the viewers were never explained this.
Conclusion The story teaches the audience the ways of getting out of the one they love but themselves making everything to be painful ‘Divorce in the Black’ is a passionate story where emotions are very hot-tempered and stormy.
