THEDÆMON

The Dæmon does deliver a slow-burning but truly melancholic experience. The Dæmon places its attention on Tom (Tyler Q Rosen) and Kathy (Sara Fletcher) searching for her husband after he disappears following the news of his father’s demise. Kathy pushes through for support from her brother, Mark (Oscar Wilson), and his girlfriend, Jess (Adriana Isabel). They find Thomas in his father’s secluded home and see him in a very different light. How much of it is the horrible event he just experienced and how much of it is worse than that?

In their own ways, both Devino and Yohe are slow to uncover the monstrous, sinister elements dwelling underneath the surface. Because of this, the audience is left to wallow in a cauldron of the characters trying to determine which characters are trustworthy and which ones are not. The Dæmon, unlike most stories, does not have a single hero who fits all the characteristics because the reader has to change their relationships with the characters a few times throughout the novel. This technique has the effect of keeping the viewers in suspense, and while some may be annoyed by the inability to form a real relationship, the idea succeeds in creating the essential sense of discomfort. The reader does not physically connect with the characters and it works well for the narrative’s purpose with the four central characters who are all seeking their identity in a society where they do not fit in.

The same can’t be said for the creature designs, which are well worth the wait. The Dæmon was shot on a low budget, but Devino and Yohe’s investment has been in the emphasis of special effects in the story.

In portraying the distant threat and the threats the characters are put through, the outcome is nonetheless phenomenal and is a fresh take on some of the well-established Lovecraftian concepts that fans are sure to appreciate. Particular mention must be made of the use of a strange suffocating membrane, as well as the colors that are splashed on the black night sky. Their peculiar beauty enchants both a viewer and a character, artfully concealing their treasonous goals.

Other movies return the viewers’ investment right away, but The Dæmon demands more. It has its ups and downs, but in the end, captures the audience’s attention with some bone-crunching and bloody final sequences. A picture that uses atmosphere and mood in order to execute, The Dæmon seems to be out of place at times but once the third act starts it knows what to do. Such little stumbles are particularly understandable since it is the first feature-length movie made by either Devino or Yohe and do not lose focus from the clear visual imagination the two have.
