This tender tale takes a turn when a woman meets a man who took an impossible vow. First things first, he is impossible to remember even after you try. You’ve been married for four years yes, he can remember, and yes, they are happily married, but the woman, she cannot remember him or the title she holds with him.

Paige being an upper middle class with an unsatisfied family because she rages quitted from her law school, manages to move to the city and then proceeds to enroll into a far more superior Art school in the city, where she proceeds to master in sculpting. Leo on the other hand, runs an independent recording studio all the while Andrew having grand plans like being one of the record producers/hooks.

They live happily. They are in love. She has no relationship with her parents. They look stunning together, and as played by Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, why not? The actors lend their roles a wonderfully warm quality. Then one winter evening, the two are involved in an accident when they are hit by a truck. He regains consciousness in the hospital. She is still under drugs to help lower the swelling in her brain. When she finally wakes up, she has no recollection of ever having met or gotten married to Leo.

In fact, she believes that she is the same person she was when her life used to be normal. She thinks she still shares a house with her folks (Sam Neill and Jessica Lange) and is still engaged to Jeremy (Scott Speedman). Her parents who liked Jeremy but not Leo could not be more pleased and want to take her away. Leo convinces her to come to his house to see if any memories come back, but to her it feels like she is staying with a stranger.

This movie portrays the true story of a couple, Kim and Krickitt Carpenter. These days, they are together, parenting two children, although she never recovered her lost memories. Paige and Leo don’t appear to be moving toward that. One does have to say that Leo, who is the most patient person ever, is slowly bringing Paige to their go to places, reminding her that she is a vegetarian, and even showcasing the studio she used to work at, but none of this rings a bell for the old Paige; she is still interested in Jeremy.

Scott Speedman as the old fiancé is quite fitting as well. He has that kind of face that looks a bit like Wile E. Coyote from some angles, while from the front he is quite friendly and even handsome. He is not a total jerk. Her parents are not that wicked either, but the character Sam Neill is makes them look a bit sinister. They all plot against her so that they can benefit from her amnesia that, fortunately for them, eliminated all the things she changed that they do not like.

The same narrative could’ve made for a worrying soap opera with overblown characters and severe outcomes. “The Vow,” is more of a sweet date movie for Valentine’s Day; women will sympathize with the poor Paige who is married to the handsome Leo and men will relish the fact that Rachel McAdams has one of the sweetest smiles ever, almost like Marisa Tomei. The more we learn about the story, honestly, the better Leo turns out to be. The way the story sorts itself out is poetic justice if I’ve ever seen one.

It all seems to be too simple. One could speculate the pain of the situation in real life. How do you broach the topic of having intimacy with your wife when you don’t recall engaging with them? Especially when, for all intents and purposes, he is not the sort of man you would pick, and you think you’re in love with a guy you’re supposedly engaged to? “The Vow” never addresses these multilayered issues, which is a shame. It’s enjoyable enough as a date movie, but that’s where it ends.
