The film is quite well directed and sends out the right message which is helping each other is quite important in our lives. The cast is good as well as likable since they portray college students which one of their peers has a father who challenges them to observe for a particular “sign” and then perform an act of kindness.
The characters of Jesse, Izzy, Ava, Kevin and Randy are brought together by Valerie Smaldone. Jesse’s dad sees this “Thursday Night Club” on a Friday and meets them for the first time. He tells them to take the initiative to assist others and says, ‘Am I right in assuming you are open to it?’
Jesse’s dad is involved in an accident with a wrong way driver and unfortunately gets killed. The last words of Jesse to his father never leave her mind, Now Jesse decides to head home for some time whilst the others go back to their daily routines.
Ava goes to a nursing home with the expectations of helping out by volunteering some analytical skills with a computer program that could benefit the residents, but her hopes get shattered when a supervisor clarifies that the residents are lonely and what they need is someone to spend time with them. On her way out the door, Ava notices a woman who is sitting alone and simply wants company. This woman goes on to say that it is a lovely day and adds, “He’s always giving us signs of His love, isn’t She?” Before long, Ava is speaking to the woman and learns that she hopes to visit her again. The elderly woman’s children left her all by herself as they have retired to Florida.
Izzy always aspired to become an actress. She is now given the chance to prepare the stage for a play by the director who tells her he appreciates her energy and that all the important roles are taken. Later, she discovers that someone is in dire need of a bone marrow transplant and so she believes it is an opportunity to do charity. She teases the nurse by saying that her oral stage test which determines if she is a match will not reveal my stage presence.
Like many children of athletes, Randy has a challenging relationship with his father who was an absent figure in his life due to his profession as a baseball player. After learning new details about his father’s, Kevin refuses to accept Randy’s attempts at establishing stronger ties with the family. To add to his struggles, Kevin’s father gets fired and he is left wondering how he would fund his next semester in college. One of the strong aspects of this film is that it is based on real events, featuring people who have real issues.
Another perk, apart from the cast, is the music. There is lively music talking about Jesus and his ability to assist us as well as the power possessed by the one who made the blind see. There are also hints of satire present. For instance, when Jesse narrates her adoration for puppies and how she initiated a ‘Puppy Palooza’ as a child, she mentions that when her father spoke about aiding the less fortunate during her childhood, she would still say that she was about puppies!
In a heartwarming moment when Jesse reminisces about the puppies that passed away, her father used to tell her that the puppies always reside in her heart permanently so they can always be with her.
It is touching to see what this movie is trying to capture. It perfectly depicts various issues like grief, loneliness, and what appears to be the insurmountable matter of dealing with uncertainty. The Thursday Night Group has a powerful moment where they gather for dinner and do not speak. Their pain is evident in silence. Apart from these moments, there are bits of comedy and laughter in the film. Instead of serving as a means to relax, these moments serve to make the viewer more tense. This, however, is turned on its head when the movie attempts to tackle these themes. It does showcase the more ‘positive’ aspects and the kindness that the Lord needs to show us, which is supposed to be the point of the movie. In the middle of the laughter, there is another wonderful scene where Izzy is worried about what bone marrow donation will do to her. She turns to a nurse and says, “And you’re pretty sure one of my limbs isn’t going to fall off?”. Izzy then gets introduced to Cameron, a 4-year-old that she donated to, alongside her parents.
It is good to see teamwork fostered through collaboration when Mr. Sweeney is introduced to assist Kevin with his scholarship scheme. But Mr. Sweeney does something extraordinary for Kevin too. And the ending is amazing as the Thursday Night Club inspires something special to be done in the community.
