The titular squad consists of three gun-toting drug runners, Gina (Meghan Carrasquillo), and Bella (Alea Hansinger), and Dani (Grace Evans). They operate a lucrative spring break business. Every year, Alpha (Jennifer Ferguson), their leader, hooks them up with the best dope on the market. Having a great physiology (ahem marketing) and selling sense sets them up for sure success.
The problem is that the leader of the local drug cartel doesn’t take kindly to them doing ten times the business he does. So hired thugs, Url (Clint McGown) and Roberto (Ricky Carter), make an entrance with the intent of forcing them to surrender complete control of the operation to them. The Squad, soon makes quick work of Roberto and Url, which, in the process, stirs a huge amount of action, especially with a rival team, J.C. (UFC fighter Julia Avila). Of course, The Squad has become the main target. Frankly, no wonder everybody is trying to pin The Squad down. Many alliances are formed only to be broken just as quickly. The body count is suspectingly high, and spring break certainly doesn’t seem so normal.
Cleverly, Carrasquillo, Hansinger, and Evans portray The Squad in Michael Bay form. They all speak fluently as well as automatically, something that the director tries so hard to achieve. It is almost as if writer-director Walker intends to construct a franchise within the three. Their first appearance on screen is as fast-talking, street-smart, and incredibly murderous, drug dealers. A round of a game of Marry, Eff, Kill gets extra bloody at the end. The fact that they have a cleaner who instantly comes to the scene shows just how connected they are.
Walker does justice to the film’s narrative by detailing the backstory of each character. This way, the audience gets engrossed in each and every character of the movie. After an outing with the girls, being slaughtered or crippled doesn’t sound so bad. A significant region of the plot of The Squad is our protagonists becoming ensnared in ever more complex and fatal problems. They are outnumbered, outclassed and, uh, you know (metaphorically). There is no doubt that their street smarts, combined with beauty, will distract and incapacitate. But their true talents lie in gunning people down in the streets. Their sole purpose is to advertise their superior drugs to the billion people celebrating spring break.
Rick Walker’s action film attempts to resurrect the long-lost exploitation flicks by bringing back the gritty, violent feel. Instead of light-hearted, silly fighting girl groups of the past, The Squad is much more serious, the story it depicts. Everything is delivered with utmost seriousness, which is unlike what you’d expect from an action movie. The dialogues are also very serious and far below what we are normally used to.
