Dr. Wesley McClaren (Steven Seagal) and his friend, downtrodden ranch worker Frank (L.Q. Jones), lasso a steer in an impressively athletic manner, while a fabulous Western chant is blasting full throttle in the background. Wesley further goes on to find a sick pony with the hope of treating it. Much to everyone’s surprise, Seagal is ridiculously noble and sympathetic; there are no shades of gray at all when it comes to the morality of his character. He even has a young and talented daughter, Holly (Camilla Belle), which makes him a tad more sympathetic and relatable.
The movie is a portrayal of the book ‘The Last Canadian’ and Segal decides to give it a more masculine and catchy title. On top of being a full-time single parent, an active animal preservationist, and a passionate worker, he is also an incredibly skilled Holistic therapist and immunologist. For labor and even a delicious slice of blackberry pie, he is willing to share his expertise and provide vitamins. Although nobody wants to be in contact with the government’s Biological Response Team, Segal is forced to lend his services. And while being trapped in such a chaotic situation, he remembers that he did have the skills to survive this mess. Shooting and martial arts. The last thing anyone would expect from a gentle doctor.
The biohazard epidemic is in full effect, and despite the fact that the local hospital is clueless regarding the matter, McClaren seems to be at the top of his game. In little to no time, numerous civilians are infected, military soldiers in hazmat suits and gas masks swarm into the area in helicopters with soldiers on high alert. Do note, the Outbreak and Contagion are both budgeted films, and they, along with this one, take the subject matter seriously. In this regard, his most recent endeavor is hard to believe. Also, he must, to some extent, square off against the masked shooters. There’s such an angle.
The use of warfare viruses is prevalent in the future, since it exclusively targets humanity and spares machines or other infrastructures. Therefore, as we shift away from the story of uncontrollable airborne pandemics, “The Patriot” switches to a fully fledged action film dominated by hostage scenarios, assaults on federal agents, Seagal inflicting overtly brutal punches on his opponents, and strained rescues, albeit halfway through the film. Furthermore, the film absurdly shows a neo Nazi henchman(Silas Weir Mitchell as Pogue) adept in medical databases, systems, coding, and vaccine formulation. Alongside this, it shows Wesley effortlessly crafting a Department of Defense ID badge with basic printer technology.
I could use a pair of extra hands too, how foolish! It doesn’t take much time for the tone of the film to shift. Not only from the already exaggerated militiamen characters but also from the commencement of Dr. Ann White Cloud (Whitney Yellow Robe), a rather stunning lady who joins in McClaren’s expedition to the mountains to sneak into a classified laboratory. From there, the plan was to start analyzing electropherogram data and start to ‘mix’ some beakers with vials. It’s borderline funny that Seagal happens to be a top-tier scientist, but additionally a one-man army. However, by the utterly ridiculous close, it’s obvious that the movie lacked sufficient biohazard thrills and martial arts combat. This particular and unique narrative does not suit Seagal’s fighting approach. Right wing terrorists and biochemical disasters? Now that’s a different story.
