Just as I feared, The Mummy Rebirth begins as agonizingly as I expected it to. Sebek, played by Shamel Hashish, walks through a laughably crafted CGI desert while clad in a horrifically crafted Halloween outfit that looks like an ancient Egyptian god. He goes down rocky stairs to meet Reheema, played by Taylor Carter, his illegitimate wife. Just as we all get ready to escape through a secret tunnel, the Pharaoh’s guards come in and mercilessly slaughter all of us.
Then I get baffled by the fact that the title sequence starts rolling, complete with a voiceover that recaps most of the things that were not explained in the prologue, which frankly was a mess to follow. To my astonishment, the CGI is still cringingly bad. Although set in a stylized manner, the sheer amount of poorness on display makes it easy to accept.
In addition, there is information that appears to be repeated in both the prologue and the opening titles. Why the prologue exists at all is baffling, as the latter provides more information, is more engaging, and is more pleasing to the eye.
The plot officially begins in modern times when archaeologists Noah (Carter) and Daniella (Brittany Goodwin) find a map of a lost ancient city. This long-forgotten place holds captive the mummified Sebek (Michal Aaron Wiede), who is intent on bringing destruction to the world. For reasons unknown to the Dauntless explorers, their boss Sager (David E. Cazares) wants to help the now-awakened mummy. Will the lovers who have been separated throughout history finally reunite for good? Can we escape from the Indiana Jones and Lara Croft comparisons to the main protagonists?
To first answer the last question, no, all of those comparisons are very relevant, especially because of their costume designs, which, to be fair, are not that bad. The mummy himself, who is an actor in a costume, is rather appealing. The physical sight of the mummy dispatching a victim or two captures the essence of the character nicely and adds to the feeling of danger.
Now, while it is true that Daniella and Noah could pass off as some of the greatest action-adventure heroes to have ever lived, is that even an issue? Khu and Justin Price, the co-writers and co-directors, believe in wearing their inspiration for the project on their sleeves.
