The Manifestation, written and directed by Geert Heetebrij, is one of those stylish thrillers that takes reality and fantasy and bends them together. Now, classifying this as a thriller alone would be an understatement, because this masterpiece cannot be summed up so easily. That’s because the filmmaker frames his own version of reality. Many of the scenes are overtly skewed and are filled to the brim with a supernatural form of psychological horror. It is a much more sophisticated kind of genre flick. The type that doesn’t spill a single drop of blood and strikes instead.
It features Stephen, played by Jack Kesy, who makes completely misguided trades in the stock market and is on the verge of losing everything. All of the money that he raided from the accounts that he shared with his wife Roni (Inbar Lavi) is now completely gone. Now he is left begging his financial coach Michael (Usman Ally) to help him, but Michael is having none of it. Michael cuts him off and metaphorically kicks Stephen out of the nest so that he can teach him to fly.
With no other options, Stephen attempts to visualize his dreams, as Michael taught him, and hires an ideal stock market consultant who wears his wife’s face but has fiery red hair instead. He calls her Veronika. Stephen’s ideal stock market idol happens to be fiercer than his actual wife. After all of Veronika’s stock tips work out, Stephen has no problem letting her convince him to use Roni’s student loan for his insane market ventures. To say Roni is furious would be an understatement, especially after discovering how Stephen burned through most of their funds. As their bond continues to strain, Stephen’s nefarious secret to success only strangles his relationship further. Veronika’s character begins to blur the lines between real and imaginary because, in his ears, she’ll always whisper the harshest truths.
More features like the Manifestation are sorely missed. Heetebriji steamrolls forward with an equilibrist’s relatability that unfolds like a pirate flag within seconds. It appears that both bread and butter-topics, like household finances, can be powerful engagement motivators. Cinematic stories way too often ignore the plight of the struggle and sad to say, it is often contemporary stories survivalist tales are far too relatable. Throughout the animated compositions, the clarity of each image is remarkable and seems like high definition you can’t even begin to imagine. From the start, two of the most important unwritten rules of indie filmmaking are: do not show any signs of struggle and look good doing it. The icing on the cake is the phenomenal electronic score by Drew Denton. Denton’s angelic tunes will have your eyebrows dancing.
Lavi excels in her dual persona role without any slacking. Yes, putting on a red wig is a super cheap way to transform but the two characters could not be more dissimilar. Roni is a real woman, fully capable of human emotion in reaction Veronika radiates the cold evil energy of a burning moon. Lavi puts her heart into every character, two different impressions of this talented actress.
Lots of movies turn people into ghosts, but very few turn life itself into a gory show. The way the videogame world created the character is just downright disturbing. The plot unveils like a flower with so many other petals, and it is truly astonishing. It has so many intriguing twists. The fighting genre Manifestation is a shockingly good indie movie that came out of nowhere. It gives me the same chills as the movie Videodrome. The weird feeling of Manifestation is and shout for it to not feel this way.
