This movie is captivating with its humor, emotional depth, and searing truths. It does an excellent job of depicting scenarios surrounding family life, parenthood, and growing up while simultaneously avoiding depicting emotionality through a sentimental filter, all while rejecting and accepting Larkinesque cynicism concerning the horrors of family life. It eschews any Gallic equivalent of Hollywood’s I love you Dad or I love you too Son. The setting ranges between five days from 1988 to 2000 which are each viewed through the perspective of a member of the Duvel family, including the cab driver Robert, his wife Marie Jeanne, and their three children Albert, Raphael, and Fleur.
As for the newfound perspectives in the years, we have Robert in 2000 who reflects upon his job achievements, and role as a husband and father. In 1998, on the edge of committing adultery, we have Marie-Jeanne who in the year prior felt rejected. Then in 1996, we are met with the budding musician Raphaël who has grieved the loss of his grandfather and is embracing a new start at his brother’s wedding. In 1993, on her 16th birthday, Fleur engages in an argument with her parents after losing her virginity which is followed by Albert, a fresh medical student, moving to live with his grandfather.
The film is straightforward yet packed with emotion, the performances are great and almost everyone will relate to something in this movie. The humor is well done as is the case in a scene where a taxi driver brings their young doctor to an important appointment. When the doctor hears the name Robert Duval he lovingly and perfectly starts quoting the scene in Apocalypse Now where the actor, with the exact same name but with two Ls, plays the napalm-sniffing Colonel Kilgore.
I have one piece of advice to give regarding New Year resolutions, and it is this no writing of any kind. There should be no social media posts, bathroom mirrors, or phone notes. It is almost certain that you will not meet any of your resolutions, but the upside is that if you do not write them down, you will not recall them by the end of the year.
Trying to broker deals with the future you know does not exist anymore will only lead to disappointment. You will not meet the goal of reading 50 novels or writing a play. Instead of moping around because you set the bar too high, remember that nine books read by 2025 are still a lot more than what was read in 2024.
By the end of next year, here’s something you will have already done while making excuses to pledge support to the Guardian and independent journalism, so while I know this is morally infuriating, you also do not have to worry about unwanted emails stressing your over practicing Italian will start flooding in.
