The Idea of You (2024)

I am sure this is not your first time to hear or read about an unusual couple, one an American, the other a British who runs a small rather narrow business, who is content with family and friends but slightly in the loam and wandering, whose partner is an internationally known figure but is bored and somewhat aimless: both are extremely stunning. There is a cause for why the celebrity has to go to an unassuming person’s place for whom a vile drink is prepared along with a painting that is quite significant and a series of invasive photographers.

‘You will find a lot of the themes of Notting Hill’ in ‘The Idea of You’, ‘you have probably guessed’. It is a more glamorous but inferior piece from writers Michael Showalter (who also directed the piece) and Jennifer Westfeldt, who have done better pictures with a more grained feel. Here, they adapt a best-selling novel by Robinne Lee. The book’s Amazon page describes it as: “featured on The Skimm’s 2020 list of Eight Books That You and Your Mother Will Appreciate.” Perhaps they went overboard on the fan service thinking that the stars of their movie would compensate for the shortcomings in the script. They are partially correct.

Even at the age of 40, Anne Hathaway appears fresh and pretty when portraying an older woman. Nicholas Galitzine on the other hand, is hot enough to be a Prince Charming. They perform at their maximum abilities even when the script restricts them to silent conversations, passionate moments, and painful goodbye scenes.

One of the roles of Hathaway is that of Solène Marchand, a small art gallery owner in trendy Silver Lake in Los Angeles and Izzy (Ella Rubin), a junior at a high school, is her only child and is divorced. Solène’s ex-husband, Daniel, who is wealthier than his ex-wife and better suited to quickly send Izzy his money than spend time with her, gets her VIP tickets to Coachella to meet August Moon, a boy band she hasn’t even liked since 7th grade. However, at the last minute, Daniel calls off the event due to work and Solène has to call off her plans of going camping solo and takes Izzy and her friends to the concert instead.

At that very place, Solène somehow looks at a singer’s trailer and thinks of it as a port a potty another clever tactic in the narrative to set up a meet cute moment.

Pop sensation Hayes Campbell (or Galitzine), who became an overnight sensation at age 14 when he auditioned to be in a boy band, is the one holding the mic. His gaze is firmly planted on Solène. why does she not know who he is, and why is she so beautiful (or rather, this is Anne Hathaway)? He goes to her exhibition, purchases every piece in it, and well, since everybody is hounding her down for interviews or autographs, they go to her house for lunch and talk about their issues of trust in relationships (and later kiss).

Up to this point, things look good. But this is where it shifts from only just believable fairytale to an obvious and easy source of material for a YouTube video ridiculing plot holes and character absurdities. For more than 23 years, Hayes has been living in the year 2024 and has spent the majority of his adult life being adored by fans and watched by the media, but they realistically expect nobody will notice Solène out in public, touring with the band across Europe, and kissing her boyfriend. Although they did change it and made him 24, and I suppose that takes some of the keys out of it, they really don’t do much with this character other than show he is a displaced, tender-hearted guy emotionally attached so completely that love leaves no room in him for anything but being the best husband quite literally. There is never a hint of: a bulge of persistent wanting to be loved; an absence of motherly affection; feelings of wanting kids in the future; or even concepts regarding the divide in generations; about the value system, training, or life experience.

The same can be said for Solène, whose character appears to have been written with little to no effort as well (still bitter after her breakup but idolizing her daughter – but even with this, when they sing along to St.

Vincent in the car and later, naturally, Barbara’s feelings about her daughter being involved with a man who is a pop star and seven years older than her daughter. Though she is married to Vincent, Hayes has even less to work with. All we know is that Nicholas is in love with Solène and maybe had some dreams about composing songs. It is also necessary to underline that the songs are well made, both original and needle drop songs.

If we could take an Oscar for having underwritten characters not only on screen but also on all other sides of the screen, Hathaway and Galitzine would not disappoint us. Although some of the people in the audience may not have enjoyed the romance as much as Solène’s sweet revenge on her dishonest ex-husband, it is however unrealistic, but as viewers we want so desperately for Solène and Hayes to get together.
