MJ Dixon, also known as Pandamonium, has released his latest creation, The Haunting of Molly Bannister, adding another tale to his cinematic universe. This one is more in line with what I expect from Mycho and is a bit different from the slasher films. It leans more towards supernatural horror, to be precise.
In Christmas 2014, a home video captures the Bannister family opening Christmas presents. To Molly’s surprise (Tiana Rogers, Slasher House 2, Molly) she receives a dolly that neither of her parents, Mary (Susan Lee Burton, Edge of Extinction) or Kenneth (Grant Kempster, King of Crime) recall buying for her. Even though Sherry (Chloe Badham, Mask of Thorn) is scared of the dolly, she has good reasons to. By the end of the night, she’s dead.
In her parents’ divorce, Molly seems to be the one suffering the most as six months later at such a tender age, she is displaying some highly unusual behavior. While her mother does all she can to help her daughter, the doctors have fallen far from being helpful. Dotty, the eldest daughter, understands the real story or at the very least, she shares their father’s intelligence. But then again, who would believe in a ‘possessed’ doll that, sin can actually kill people?
The evil doll possessing a seemingly normal little girl gives one chills, and that is precisely why Slasher House 2, as stated in the Molly animation and her feature that follows, The Haunting of Molly Bannister serves the purpose Molly’s slasher origination wanted too. But to be perfectly honest, it could have been a good movie if there is even a bare minimum of ideas. Unfortunately, it lacks creativity and budget.
The weaknesses of The hauntings of Molly Bannister is the ever repeating same concept of a vicious doll being the focal point of almost every horror movie. While the doll itself is unidentifiable, it keeps appearing at places where it should not be and BOOM! There goes scare factor. Moreover, in the 1 scene the doll is shown attacking someone, the doll – rather being scary, is obviously just being hurled towards the person. In all honesty, it becomes a laughing stock rather than a scary doll.
The film has sinister vibes as the doll sometimes changes into a mobile and giant version of itself, which creeps out Jake Kempster. However, it makes no sense and comes too late. The shocking revelation thrown in just before the movie wraps doesn’t quite hit the way the makers anticipated. This is a common curse found in most prequels and origin tales; the lack of suspense. How could anyone be taken aback after knowing the ending to the story?
Due to a few impressive sections and complementing the intensely white costume with the lighting, The Haunting of Molly Bannister doesn’t go higher than the genre of Dolls or Annabellum: The Curse of Salem.
