The 97th Annual Academy Awards happened last night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with iconic host Conan O’Brien. The famous talk show host made a real game of the event, taking cracks at showcase participant Drake, former president Trump, and even Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón, who was there. A couple of bits worked, most didn’t, and even when the show ran a bit over, he looked to be having a great time.
The main shock of the night came from Sean Baker, who was the winner, producer, and director of the movie Anora and took home four Oscars, including Best Picture of the Year; this makes Baker only the second individual in history to take home four Oscars in the same night after Walt Disney. The other winner was Mikey Madison who surprisingly took the award for Best Actress from Demi Moore, bringing Anora’s total wins to five (losing one for it’s A Real Pain’s Kieran Culkin’s Best Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov).
Other winners include No Other Land, a documentary feature film which currently lacks US distribution. Both the Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers passionately argued for the undoing of Palestine’s ethnic cleansing. Janus Film’s Latvian animation Flow won Best Animated Feature, while Walter Salles’ Brazilian submission for the Oscars I’m Still Here won Best International Feature and left Emilia Pérez, the most nominated film of the night, with two wins for Best Original Song “El Mal” and Best Supporting Actress. The supporting actress went to Zoe Saldaña, completing a clean sweep for her this awards season.
The Brutalist won three more Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actor (his second in the category) for Adrien Brody which denied Chalamet a record as the youngest Best Actor Oscar winner. Wicked and Dune: Part Two also won two Oscars each for obvious reasons and gave special thanks, from each Dune team to Director Denis Villeneuve for his Oscar-winning film adapted from Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel. Naturally, The Substance won Best Makeup & Hairstyling with no competition and Conclave finished its winning streak with Best Adapted Screenplay.
Overall, it was another dull Oscar night, with a rather mediocre list of winners. From my side, I do not think any of the predictions were hit. Out of the five I missed, three were in the Shorts categories an absolute disaster for everyone involved. My biggest swing was betting on Conclave for Best Film Editing over Anora. Some risks were worth taking like Flow for Animated Feature. I cannot really complain about those results. Hopefully next year there will be less grueling press cycles for the awards and more good movies to look forward to. Speaking of lengthy, I need to get up to speed on a few things.
