The Exorcism 2024

Joshua John Miller’s The Exorcism (2024) tells the story of Anthony Miller who has a drug addiction. While Russell Crowe has earned great success, he is currently being forced to be a priest which is filled with a herd of demons. This is where Crowe is placed in an unimaginable situation where he has to take help from Adam Goldberg’s cruel techniques as the director which causes him to face his struggles as well. More and more odd activities start happening on the film sets; at that point, the issue is how much of it is him and how much is other factors. In attempting to confront his demons, does Miller come into conflict with the underlying demons that are responsible for the making of this movie?

Once exorcism comes out from the mouths of actors or actresses in the movie world, the very first thing that pops into the minds of listeners is the all time favorite horror film The Exorcist. This film does pay tribute to the one and exclusive classic that it looks up to but for us, there are other iconic horror films to consider. But there is a clear deep link and relationship between this film and the origin of horrors and the film in the first place is a modern day psychological thriller which does wonders.

Joshua John Miller happens to be the son of Jason Miller, who acted in the role of Father Karras in The Exorcist film. Moreover, the name of the movie that was shown in this film, The Georgetown Project, refers to the location in Washington, DC in which The Exorcist was shot.

The very interesting aspect of the film is that it feels like the real The Exorcist and tends to be a portrayal of the strange events that surrounded the making of the classic film dedicated to Jason Miller. It is not hard to imagine that some of the peculiar and well documented events that took place on the set during the ‘70s were actually staged for this film.  I imagine him talking to his son, telling him how the time always comes to tell certain stories.

Because of that and a number of other reasons, The Exorcism is more of a meta-psychological thriller than an actual horror film. However there are some strange and unpleasant episodes in the film, still, they cannot be considered as horror by most people. Yes, there are a couple of induced noises that make one jump, but that is reserved as tea time for this kind of movie.

An actor rarely has an opportunity to save a performance, however, the atmosphere and depth of Crowe’s work in this film are by far superior to the one that he delivered in The Pope’s Exorcist. Ryan Simpkins is effective in portraying the role of a rebellious loving daughter who cares for her father and is worried for his safety as well as sobriety. There is also merit to Adam Goldberg who plays one of the most psychotic varieties of director that an actor can encounter, preoccupied with the material and disregards looking after the actor.

The Exorcism is a story and a picture of interesting visuals which suggest an imitation of a fifth kind of horror film creation. It may be unsuccessful, but it is praiseworthy to attempt.
