When heading to a business meeting, David comes across a deserted tanker truck in the middle of a dessert. There’s a chance of him being killed by the driver of the truck because the driver has seen something that he finds objectionable. This is a very intricate premise, yet, for the most part, it is effective in an action movie and herein lies its, simplicity, faultless execution.
Again, this is one of those movies that are constructed around simpleness. This time over, there is not one location, but there is only the road through a couple of American states, and basically one main actor. Dennis Weaver, a relatively not as popular actor, is the main character, and we have to say, he did really good work. You can hear him very well, and to give him credit, the actor is very easy to like, and you feel his every frustration throughout.
The scenes that stood out to me were the two at the taverns, and that particular scene with the snakes is worth remembering”. Although the latter part is rather predictable, it still resulted in a workable and impressive conclusion. Most of its action was very impressive and utilized the setting and premise very well. The tanker truck literally becomes an ominous villain of sorts, and it is commendable how he made an inanimate object feel so alive and dangerous.
Despite that, the issues with the action are that it is simply excessive. At the beginning having the two engaged in a fun game of cat and mouse is thrilling when it should be captivating, but after a while it became tedious for many action movies. Unlike most blockbusters that depict action, this one is more nuanced, and actually helped Spielberg land some incredible jobs after this, but for me the second half was simply too much and incredibly repetitive.
Duel, a film by Spielberg, is well directed, which explains the phenomenal opportunities he got almost right after. The camera work is superb and he was able to score it very well, truly astonishing for a television movie. The first half is far better than the second half when it comes to entertainment which truly is a sad sight.
Even if the second half of Duel is a bit monotonous, the combination of superb action and great execution keeps it entertaining somehow. It is simple yet greatly bound premise with many scenarios making it one to remember. Duel movie is indeed a masterpiece as it is very well acted, shot, and tremendously cinematic. That is the reason why Spielberg rapidly started his career with this wonderful new winner.
